Re: Vesper Cortex Cellular Antenna

That's what I was thinking. I must just be a commerical unit, but the only one that I find that seems reasonable is...

Re: Vesper Cortex Cellular Antenna

Starlink would be a great! But, I don't have that. The issue with Wifi is that it isn't going to be near by, and I won't have the uid or pwd even if it was.

My primary use case for cell is off...

Re: Vesper Cortex Cellular Antenna

The antennas I've seen do have specs for celluar so that's not an issue.

The likelyhood of there being wifi at an anchorage are very low, and even if it was there, I wouldn't have the id or pwd....

Re: Vesper Cortex Cellular Antenna

I say this respectfully, do you think how inexpensive the antenna was is affecting it's performance? Do you think a more expensive one would perform better, or is there no real difference in the...

Re: Vesper Cortex Cellular Antenna

I see where you're going with that option. That would also boost the cell phone too which would be a nice safety addition as well.

The reason I asked about a specific antenna for the Cortex...

Vesper Cortex Cellular Antenna

Just installed a Cortex, and it doesn't come with a cell antenna, and the internal is unlikely(?) to be strong enough.

Vesper seems to sell an antenna, but considering the Garmin buy out, I...

Re: BVI Weather in July

We're more interested in the sailing than marina hopping if that makes sense. We're comfortable anchoring, no problem there. Having access to a restaurant every night is not required. For must...

Re: BVI Weather in July

Thanks for the info! Any suggestions for a charter company or route for about 5 days?

BVI Weather in July

Hello!

We've got some free time in July and are thinking of chartering a small sailboat (30ft) out of Tortola, for about a week from July 15 - 24 or so.

What's the weather like for sailing, and...

Deck fitting for Solar

Looking for suggestions for deck fittings to handle 2 110W panels, for 10 Amps.

Any recommendations?

Good marina in BVI to keep boat

We are considering keeping a sailboat somewhere in the BVI's, but finding it tricky to get information on what marinas are good, and could provide haul out, etc.

It would be for something in the...

Re: How many hours is too many?

Interesting discussion! I admit I'm not sure how to apply it.

It seems to me that it is going to be a bit of a crap shoot. Yes, maintenance will matter a lot, however there is no way to know how...

Re: How many hours is too many?

And right there you hit it on the head. That's part of what started this whole conversation; the other part being how to evaluate an engine with those hours.

It's seen 6 months of sea water...

Re: How many hours is too many?

Firstly, I appreciate you comments! @Kenbo too.

Both of you get the idea of what I'm trying to do. I suppose I did get a bit more focused as it went.

With respect to above, you're not half...

Re: How many hours is too many?

That's my thinking too. Hence why I asked. I'm not sure if that's something that is common place to ask up here in the frozen North though.

I guess it comes down to whether or not the owner is...

Re: How many hours is too many?

Science for the sake of pure learning of course!

Boat is in Ontario, Canada. No boats like this stay in the water for winter if you like them.

As it's on the hard, a survey would be...

Re: How many hours is too many?

That makes sense to me as well. Compared to the other C30's that are comparable, 4000 is a lot higher.

Assuming running the engine just to get out of the harbour is worse than motorsailing a lot,...

Re: How many hours is too many?

Good to know! That's true isn't it. You can't leave water in the boat over winter.

Just out of curiosity, do you think that's a crazy thing to ask to do..?

Re: How many hours is too many?

How would sitting on the hard for 6 months of winter shrink wrapped affect the engine? What's the correct winterization procedure?

Also, would being indoors on the hard, unheated, result in...

Re: How many hours is too many?

I think, other than the basic steps (cold start, exhaust colour etc) that I need to understand the maintenance and why it was run 140~ hours per year. Apparently it's an AME that owns it now. I'm a...

Re: How many hours is too many?

Noted. Good point. I think I'll discuss the process I'd like to try and see if the response is positive. If not well, then I guess it's a pass.

Re: How many hours is too many?

In a word? Canada. :) Boat is along near Toronto. This time of year and for the next few weeks all boats are on the hard so it's a lot easier, with the exception of the engine test, sea trial to do...
