Re: Aluminium boat in steel filled former shipyard harbour

You absolutely should consider the 2.5 volt galvanic isolator plus made by Yandina. It has twice the isolation of conventional isolators. The natural voltage in the water can be as high as 0.9...

Re: AC ground current leakage

Agree with EngNate 100%. At a yacht club in Cape Canaveral we had 6.3 volts between neutral and ground. Ground wire in the docks was only 10 gauge compared to much heavier main conductors so cross...

Re: AC ground current leakage

Yes, it is correct. If you put a Galvanic Capacitor (check Google and see detailed explanation.) across the isolator, the AC leakage current will flow through it and the voltage across the diodes...

Re: AC ground current leakage

Isolators block ANY current that is due to a voltage less that the threshold.

DC current is not blocked if AC current is flowing because on every second half cycle the DC current is added on top...

Re: AC ground current leakage

You can now get 50 amp high voltage galvanic isolators for Aluminum boats - - 2.4 volts instead of standard 1.2. Designed for Aluminum boats that already have up to 0.9 volts potential but also...

Re: West Marine Battery Combiner

We (Yandina LLC) are the manufacturer of the West Marine Combiner.
I have not read any of the above responses.
The switching about once a minute is intentional.
The Yandina combiners are designed...

Re: Anchoring too close to other boats?

We were in a crowded anchorage in Elizabeth Harbor.
The sound of a heavy anchor chain rattling got our attention.
A 75 ft yacht had grabbed a spot right in the middle.
One of the others near it...

Re: Swing keel on a 42-50 footer

We had a retractable keel on our 71 ft steel ketch. Draft down 13 feet, draft up 5.5 feet. Perfect for cruising the Bahamas. It was actually about 8 inches off center so with it UP there was a...

Re: Air Lock in raw water system downstream of pump

We had this problem with our watermaker. While underway small bubbles would be sucked in, go through the raw water pump and get trapped in the filter of the watermaker.

Here is what we used to...

Re: Vented Loop

Vented loops are only as good as the reliability of the vent valve and most commercial vents have a built in failure mechanism.

Re: Combine black and grey water?

Hi Peggie, it has been many years! I turned 80 last week! Sold the boat about 16 years ago. By all means, add it to your list of no-nos.

Re: Combine black and grey water?

On a related subject, a brilliant idea I had was an utter disaster.

Flushing a toilet with salt water works but far from ideal.
My idea was to take that soapy grey water and use a Y valve to...

Re: Market Research - Small watermaker

What is all this paranoia about making water in less than pristine locations?
We used a 10gph watermaker for 14 years cruising in ANY location. The reverse osmosis process is so thorough at...

Re: Anchoring Protocol revised

Overheard as a 71 ft ketch pulls into a crowded anchorage. At the sound of anchor chain rattling out heads pop up all round.

"You're a little close aren't you?"

"OH its OK, we're made of...

Re: Corrugated hose or smooth for bilge pumps?

Re: Galvanic isolators on positive side of 12V bus

Correct, they are heavy current diodes to isolate batteries when charging is finished. They have been largely replaced by Combiners that have no voltage drop so your batteries get a full charge.

Re: Charging 24V Bank With 12V Charger

The Trollbridge24 will charge both batteries from a 12 volt source. It puts the batteries in parallel for charging and switches them in series automatically when a load is applied.

Some nitty gritty details for those still following the thread.

Batteries are charged with current. The amount of charge injected is measured in amp-hours, not volt-hours or even watt-hours. ...

Re: Yandina Trollbridge2400

Don't "sweat" it. Exceeding the limit will not do any damage. The current limit features built in will prevent relay contact welding so at overloads up to 1,000 amps the only downside is momentary...

Re: Yandina Trollbridge2400

Although the Trollbridge2400 is limited to a 200 amp charging source there are numerous reasons you don't have to provide any fancy protection.

1. The charging source is typically rated for...

Re: Yandina Trollbridge2400

There are current limiting features already built into the Trollbridge2400. No additional equipment should be needed.

Re: Yandina Trollbridge2400

The high cost 500 amp relay you see on the Trollbridge2400 is used to put the batteries in series, it replaces the traditional jumper between a pair of 12 volt batteries.

Using 300 amp relays, to...
