Try an inverted "U", the flap will then fall down. You can raise and zip when you've finished what you're doing.

I've seen this on a few boats it seems to work well, the clear flap was no worse...

Check out "Sailing Luckyfish", their experience with a hydrogenerator seems good, and on a Wharram cat (as fast or faster than an Outremer). If memory serves, they had it installed in the Caribbean....
