Re: Scotland, Wales, Ireland

Google maps show 3 Knoydarts south of Skye. I assume its Doune Knoydart you're talking about, but it has a road.
Are you sure it has a pub?

Re: Scotland, Wales, Ireland

Apparantly, there are a lot more pontoons in Scotland, since previous visit. (Two would actually represent "a lot")

Is there a listing, or must I browse port - by- port?

Finally revisiting this...

Re: Where to Mount AIS Antenna?

I question the validity of the 5 mile statement. I assume it originates from the distance to horizon from a 3 feet elevation.
Remember, the other guy's antenna also has elevation (the big guy's a...

Re: Where to Mount AIS Antenna?

Thats what I would do. Who wants unnecessary weight in the mast and distant AIS info anyway. You'll see the vessel a lot earlier on the AIS than you used to see it visually, even with the antenna on...

Re: HELP NEEDED FOR MSc RESEARCH

The introduction of electronic chartplotters in pleasurecraft is the greatest detriment to safety ever.

Not because of digital charts, but because of the marriage of plotters and electronic (now...

Re: Paper vs. Electronic Charts - what's really the difference?

I didn't know that GPSs has a DR capability. I know the old Transit system had. It had to! Based upon external sensors.

Chart plotters may have DP, but a chart plotter is not a GPS even if it has...

Re: Paper vs. Electronic Charts - what's really the difference?

I believe Garmins EPE is similar to Circular Error Probable (CEP) i.e. a 50% probability.

It is my philosophy to err on the side of caution. I may have wasted a lot of time during my life, but...

Re: Paper vs. Electronic Charts - what's really the difference?

Yes, prolly one of the DOPs. Useful, but potentialy treacherous.

Dilution of position (DOP). Its should be noted that they, Horisontal-, Vertical- Geometric-(from LoranC) and PDOP . Don't...

Re: Paper vs. Electronic Charts - what's really the difference?

I speak no evil about Furuno. On the contrary - I like Furuno.

However your plot is filtered, dampened and you use EGNOS. You have a proper antenna installation, and I guess there are few horizont...

Re: Paper vs. Electronic Charts - what's really the difference?

The image is very small here. It should be much larger. Maybe it is in my album.
I should also add, the plot is taken under stationary conditions.

Re: Paper vs. Electronic Charts - what's really the difference?

True, but entering the out of way places - using WGS84 - is more frequent.

Thats why I reccomend VisualGPS. Its simple to use, free and may surprise you.

But has no relevance to this...

Re: Paper vs. Electronic Charts - what's really the difference?

I beg to differ on the first part. Charting errors occur, but are not common.

On the second I agree, but its usually not the GPS' fault.

GPS error happen all the time, you just don't notice...

So, I Am educating myself on tidal conditions through the Pf and am, in my opinion, at a...
