No they're not required but a lot of ships have them in case their trade route changes they're ready.

Wow, really? Repeal the Jones Act and send MORE work over seas? Hell no! There was a study done, Jones Act vessels cost $0.01 per mile more. ONE penny per mile. But no, let's send more American jobs...

In short, visibility. Imagine how big the blind spot on the bow would be if the house was all the way aft. Other companies with large ships have the house mounted about 3/4 of the way forward.

At any rate, where would you mount free fall lifeboats on this ship? There isn't any place, it's a mid mounted house. Run from the house...

I'm pretty sure SOLAS doesn't require EPIRBs in every life boat, only SARTs

I'll have to find the article, the president of TOTE said it was activated. Also the life boats are open top, no protection there.

They were open top life boats and the whole crew could fit into 1 boat if needed. Being an open top, the crew is safer on the ship. No debris or slicks found yet, and epirb was set off. Still hope.
