Sounds like anything related to re-threading (with epoxy or thread insert) is a bad idea, so I will stay away from that approach.

I'm not sure what's behind the tape, it was too high up the mast for me to check.
The boat has been neglected and been sitting on the hard for at least 2 years, so there are plenty of potential...
