Hey Barkie..I am going to incorporate plate steel into my design, along with good wood joinery. I am satisfied with my design.. As soon as I build and install it I'll try to upload a picture...but...

Re: Proper support under deck stepped mast.

Cadence? The original set up 42 years ago was a half bulkhead with a short 90 degree return. That was Irwin's design...I guess. I'll be distributing the load equally and with a lot less wood than the...

Re: Proper support under deck stepped mast.

Thank you Crazyoldboatguy, but the structure that was put there was not original... And on top of that had had its lower half sitting in water from the hatch being left open. It had to go. I have...

Re: Proper support under deck stepped mast.

Thank you Market. I have come up at a design that I will believe to work while not being so overly bulky. Like I have stated previously, the original support was a plywood wall and a short 90 degree...

Re: Proper support under deck stepped mast.

Thank you Garrets. I have thought of a compression pole of some type, but I'm opting for more ease of movement through the cabin. So I'm probably going to build a doorway/header to disperse the load...

Re: Proper support under deck stepped mast.

I guess I didn't know what to expect...I've never owned a sailboat, but logic did kick in and I put a temporary support up. The structure that was built was bulky to say the least and not engineered...

Re: New to Sailboats

I'm sure I will. I did check hole for soft spots and found none. There are no signs of crazing or cracking around mast step. Maybe I got lucky? Another concern are the thru hole fittings..they are...

Proper support under deck stepped mast.

I have recently purchased a 1973 Irwen28. This boat was abandoned and I got it for $200. Previous owner had done some plywood work in the interior. The boat was flooded with rain water, due to the...

I am very happy to join this site. I have recently purchased a 1973 Irwen28, I will have many questions regarding this boat, and I know I've come to the right place.
