I was thinking "hollow" sound may be the popping you get at your air intake when you have a stuck/bent intake valve. Try putting your hand close/over air intake while cranking. Do you feel any puffs...

Spinning faster than normal..
Hollow sound..
Perhaps stick/bent exhaust valve. From cranking/waterlock
Remove v cover. Chk valve operation

Is the fuel tank vent blocked? Remove fuel filler cap.

Sticking a hose into the raw water pump intake could possibly fore water into cylinders via exhaust valves-causing waterlock &/or internal damage.
Suggest you pour water into strainer instead....

It is good practice to immediately check your oil pressure gauge & your water flow out the exhaust Thru hull each time you start engine.

Good news-progress!
Your raw water pump should have no problem sucking seawater,instantly,from the thru hull to the pump,even if that complete hose & filter circuit was bone dry & sucking it from...

I haven't heard anything lately.It is early for SJ R.-normal yrs the ice does't go out til Apr.,though I believe the lower river is mainly clear this yr. Normal launch of pleasure craft happens...

We installed several of these on local ferries in the '90s.

If your V-drive model is equipped with it's own oil pressure pump,so that it's bearings are lubed by this pressure pump-lubrication only occurs when the V-drive is being driven by the operating...
