Re: Do you pay for true LOA?

Yes, LOD should be the actual length of the boat's hull, and LOA I think of as including built-in parts of boats like bowsprits, but not anchors. Clearly not all sources agree with these definitions,...

Re: Do you pay for true LOA?

My marina actually measures the boat including any gear that extends off the boat such as anchors or windvanes. We are charged by the actual length including gear.

Re: Circunavigation Let's get real and rough

Decide if you want to sail or build. There are plenty of rugged boats out there of all materials.

Re: Using headphones on night watch?

There are places you wouldn’t want to do anything except keep a watch - busy shipping lanes etc. And there are many thousands of miles where keeping a good watch doesn’t require listening as well. If...

Hey, don't blame it on the womenfolk! Bet you're relieved she's holding the line!

Re: Repurposing Old Laptop for Ship's Computer

I've been told I should use a dc to dc converter to clean up signal but assumed the cable did that.

Re: Repurposing Old Laptop for Ship's Computer

Do I need a buck converter if I'm using a 'car charger' for my laptop?

Re: External Antenna Needed for VHF GPS?

You will be able to see ships on the AIS from further away if you can get that antenna higher. If you sail offshore the extra notice would be very valuable.

Re: questioning my choice of boats

Our 1967 Ohlson 41 is similar CCA era design to yours, and yes, very small volume with long overhangs. Ours is a sloop however. And our keel may be more cutaway, not sure. We have solar panels on our...

Re: questioning my choice of boats

We have solar, then picked up a towed generator for emergencies (once we had dirty fuel and couldn't run engine, plus it was stormy for days so no solar, and had no way to charge batteries).

We...

Re: questioning my choice of boats

We had six hours of engine time on a 26 day 2500 mile trip from Seattle to Hilo. YMMV. We don't run the engine unless it is to protect equipment or health.

Re: What should a stack pack/sail pack/ lazy bag cost?

Materials will run you about $500 for your size boom. I made some adjustments to the sailrite version to make it more robust. My notes about the process are here:...

Re: What should a stack pack/sail pack/ lazy bag cost?

I did mine a few years back for an 18' boom. I made some changes to the sailrite instructions for a more robust solution. Larger boats or offshore use seem to suggest a more robust design would be...

Re: Refillable 16 oz. Propane Cylinder

We stick ours in a large PVC pipe secured to the stern rail. Out of weather and sun and no chance of leaking to interior.

Re: Cruising Hawaii in the Winter

We cruised Hawaii 8 years ago and LOVED it, plan to make it our first stop again on our more extensive Pacific tour starting this summer from Washington. I hear that the decrepit state of the marinas...

Re: Yuloh, sweeps and getting into the dock without a motor.

Of course the Pardeys are famous for their yoloh usage. Larry taught me to how to do it one day at the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend, but gosh, it would take me a lot of practice to feel...

Re: Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head

I'm hoping to use my homemade stackpack to collect water. We had no measurable rain last time we went Washington to Hawaii, and may not again (we leave summer 2016), but south from there we should....

Re: Family Adventure 2017

I'd recommend getting the boat ASAP somewhere between NC and FL. I think the time to get across to the islands from NC or FL is less than refitting a "ready-to-go" boat! Plus if you want the two...
