Re: Aluminium Chainplates
Thanks, I had a quick look and that is one site that I will be going through thoroughly when I get a moment. Nice workshop they have. |

Re: Aluminium Chainplates
I must be missing something, but wouldn't you need to include the dimensions of the rig to calculate the chainplate size (as well as possibly the righting moment). If I had a 1 metre mast attached to... |

Re: Aluminium Chainplates
I'll agree to that 100%, design by popularity contest would not be very useful..... but ..... it is also important to see what is actually out there, garner wisdom from others etc. I've known and... |

re: Aluminium Chainplates
Thanks everybody for the great comments and suggestions. The forward bulkhead will be directly under the main mast so I'll extend the necessary part of it above the deck (saving me one weld), then... |

re: Aluminium Chainplates
I think the usual practice is to calculate this for a large number of cycles, sometimes so large that there is no conceivable limit (as done with airframes). This is the part that I am not familiar... |

Re: Should I install a used engine?
I would be suspicious if water entered the crankcase and wasn't dealt with quickly. Was it salty? The other problem would be if they pulled the head to have a look and then just rested the head... |

Aluminium Chainplates
Does anyone have any experience with aluminium chainplates. As my hull is aluminium, my first choice is to weld suitable layers of aluminium on in order to spread the load and bring it all up to an... |

Re: Tinting 2 part Poly?
I did this once to paint a couple of sailing dinghies for a youth group. Light blue is easy, light red is PINK, in this case hot pink, as it was already mixed I went ahead and it was actually quite... |

Re: solder
With one proviso, there must be a small amount of solder between the soldering iron and the work, air is a good insulator and the chances that a big flat iron is perfectly flush with the big round... |

Re: Synthetic Standing Rigging With Deadeyes
Got a quote, $800 for 100 metres ... compares well with the price of the other stuff... so it's Dynex Dux for me. |

Re: center-cockpit tiller
It's aluminium (or alumiNUM which I believe is very similar :))... Originally I was going to build a wooden boat as I was more familiar with fiberglass-epoxy-ply work, but then my son built a small... |

Re: Synthetic Standing Rigging With Deadeyes
The creep would not be an issue for me if I use deadeyes/lashings as they have plenty spare length. My worry would be if the creep varied say by temperature (can you have negative creep?). If the... |

Re: synthetic standing rigging with deadeyes
I'd be interested in the reasons why spectra or dyneema couldn't be used. Is it fatigue, UV, too much stretch (ie the mast will collapse under load) or does it fall apart. I think Colligio Marine... |

Synthetic Standing Rigging With Deadeyes
I know that some of this has been discussed in the past, but ..... I am thinking of using spectra, dyneema or some other such plastic for "standing" rigging with perhaps deadeyes. Keeping in mind... |

Re: Workong on the deck reinforcement, any suggestions are welcome!
You are lucky with the polyester, it should come with warnings, but then you can buy it in the hardware store. I've been involved with the repair of a few old polyester boats and the hull is great... |

Re: Workong on the deck reinforcement, any suggestions are welcome!
If it was just a matter of supporting the deck's own weight and preventing it from bowing downwards, I would try laying a frame 2x1 pine across the deck and hot melt glue it to the deck. I have done... |

Re: center-cockpit tiller
oops, that other reply should be on Andrew's post. Calypsosailor, I'll try to keep things up to date as I go, but I can be a very slow worker. Now I've decided to treat this as a job and put it... |

Re: center-cockpit tiller
Something I never thought of, but it makes sense. My cockpit is shorter than it is wide so not having the tiller occupy the whole cockpit would be good. Would it be an advantage to have some sort of... |

Re: center-cockpit tiller
Thanks, That's a great boat. I like their philosophy, rock solid and practical, got plenty of good ideas. If I see it correctly from the photos, they have a long tiller that passes over the aft... |

Re: center-cockpit tiller
I haven't been game to ask Bruce yet 8-) Although I've kept the hull exactly as specified in the plans, I've departed fairly radically by having a center cockpit. As I sat in my half completed... |

center-cockpit tiller
Hi, I'm currently building a Tom Thumb 26. I've decided to go with a center-cockpit but would like to keep the tiller. To do this I need some sort of linkage and I'm interested in any opinions as to... |
