Re: Is an SSB/pactor modem worth it?

Regarding the DSC models available from ICOM, my understanding - based on information from dealers and trainers - is that availability is being determined by regulators, not by ICOM decisions:

Re: Is an SSB/pactor modem worth it?

Hi Guys,

I might not have been clear. When Chiki Rafiki turned turtle and the crew went into the water, there was a PLB operating for a day or two. Presumably that was attached to one or more...

Re: Is an SSB/pactor modem worth it?

I agree, the question of electricity can be a hurdle to maintaining the 24/7 DSC watch. But resourceful small yacht mariners can usually find a way if we want to. For me it's a matter of balancing...

Re: Is an SSB/pactor modem worth it?

If you plan to be anywhere beyond coastal VHF communication networks, you need a marine HF/SSB with DSC to maintain direct contact with shore based MRCCs and with any other yachts, commercial vessels...

Re: newbies and M710 questions

Hi Bill,

I agree that the M710 certainly has a lot of very useful life in it for a lot of very important purposes, and as I mentioned in my earlier post, I own five.
But without Selective...

Re: Cruising Comms Set Up!

I'm interested to learn from existing users where they have used the DeLorne successfully.

Thinking this could be a convenient and low-cost backup to DSC capable HF/SSB, and good to take...

Re: newbies and M710 questions

Hi Ted,

The ICOM M710 is a great radio. Tough, durable and reliable. I own five of them as I provide the SailMail hub that covers SE Asia, the NW Pacific and eastern/northern Indian Ocean. My...

Hi John and others who have contributed to this very helpful topic. I firmly believe that yachties can help yachties and the DSC capable marine HF/SSB radio makes it easy and convenient to do so. If...

Re: The Horse before the Cart?

As the owner of a few boats, crew on many, and Yachtmaster Instructor, my suggestions are:

1. Forget buying a test boat. You will likely lose a lot of money on resale value, and/or repairs,...

Re: SSB or SatPhone ?

Hi Robbie,

A very interesting suggestion. I do not know of such an option in a PC, but perhaps someone in the HAM world has more information.

I recall when I first started using HF/SSB radio...

Re: SSB or SatPhone ? DeLorme inReach may be key

Hi Suzanne,

This looks to be a very useful satellite based backup option at a reasonable price. I assume since it is Iridium based, it is available around the world?

I will certainly look...

Re: SSB or SatPhone ?

Hi Canibul,

Sounds like the 701 is ready for retirement. And perhaps it was not working for a long time with the previous owner; since the Pactor controller was still in the box.

A lot has...

Re: SSB or SatPhone ?

Hi El Pinguino,

My understanding is that the early days of DSC for commercial vessels was problematic. And certainly I was very unhappy about the impact for non-SOLAS vessels - no more...

Re: SSB or SatPhone ?

Hi John,

I think your comments make perfect sense. A difference over this side is that MRCC Australia's advice about using EPIRBs says:

1. Use the radio first to make contact and organise a...
