Re: Shins. Not "shims" - shins.

And I thought I was the only one! Since I was in my twenties I have whacked my shins going over the cockpit coamings They look like I have been in a war. Only solution is to stay ashore!

Re: Shins. Not "shims" - shins.

It happens to me outside as well as boats. I dont feel it at all and they take forever to heal due to slow blood flow to those spots. The scars stay dark for a long time too.

Light Sabres? Like in Star Wars? 😁

Wear knee pads under pants in summer dawn to dusk when working on boat in summer. When weather gets cooler, into winter, sewn in pads from knees down are great as can drop down and do what needs doing and not have to get a transfusion!

So yeah. I guess extreme sports can be even worse.

I thought my hairless shins-- the result of skiing all those years
were special....

Re: Shins. Not "shims" - shins.

I almost always sail in long pants. Saves needing sunscreen and protects the stilts. I wouldn't think twice to make some shin pads out of wood and maybe a bit of closed cell foam if I were getting cut often.

Overall I highly doubt anyone notices or cares what your shins look like wouldn't lose sleep over it

Just tell people you are a professional wrestler, and you get banged up.

Just remember: “Scars are tattoos with a better story”! I have chunks out of mine from riverboarding. Carry a styptic pen with me, but all bleeding stops…eventually.

my shins are mangled from boats. Over and over and over again they get cut open.

it happens so often I don’t even feel it. There are no nerve endings left in my shins.

this is just the latest one from carrying a Jerry can up my transom steps and hitting my shin while doing that. Look below it. See all those scars? Those are permanent. And there are several more all over the place of varying shades. On both shins. From ankle to knee.

Unsightly business.

does this happen to you guys also?

My question is, "why are you worried about what other people think?"

Since I played rugby before I took up racing sailboats, no. Doesn't bother me. Tape it up and sail on.

YES YES YES!
My Catalina 350 is notorious for doing exactly that. Both of my shins are scarred forever, I consider it my badge of armor.

Happy to see I am not the only one! Wear it proudly, I do.

I've seen hundreds of naked people.

People have scars

That is life.

My wife and I met a lady whose doctor saw the “boat bites” on her body and asked if her husband was abusing her!
