Temporary coolant pump for a Volvo MD11D

Another story that starts with a dock line getting wrapped up in the prop. My Fulmar has the original 1983 Volvo MD11D with a heat exchanger that runs like a top. After I freed the dock line, I discovered the fresh water pump pulley lying on the ground in the bilge, the impeller pin had sheared off somehow (on dissembly the bearings were nonexistent). The pump (#829953) is no longer available but I found a place that will rebuild it but it will take 4 weeks (Flying Dutchman in OR).
In the meantime, my plan is to incorporate a 12v VW auxiliary pump (Bosch 0392020039) into the cooling circuit. The Bosch has 2 ports (in/out), while the Volvo has 3 (in/out/nipple to coolant reservoir). I’m thinking I can put a T fitting on the in side and run that to the reservoir. Do you guys think this is a reasonable McGiver solution to keep me on the water for the next month?

I probably have the correct Volvo pump here, would you be interested in it? If so, I will look. Joe

Re: Temporary coolant pump for a Volvo MD11D

I went ahead and added the temporary pump while I wait for the rebuild. I motored at 75% speed for 1 hr and the temp gauge stayed at the green/red edge. New in & out lines are hot, block is hot but not "burn your fingers" hot. A couple of takeaways: the pump has to be well below the entire fresh water circuit, otherwise it won't bleed and you get vapor lock; in a pinch, I used a couple short pieces of clear vinyl tubing (rated to 175F) to bridge the Volvo ports with the 3/4" elbows, which turned out to be useful b/c I could see when the air had bled thru the system
