I've just finished installing my NEW volvo D2-40 for reasons stated in other posts.
The base engine is "perkins" the id plate right on the block.

The factory that makes the Perkins engine is a stone throw away from my workshop.

from what im told,the factory makes"perkins engines" but they are badged as Volvo marine engines.

ive got one of the design engineers coming in on tuesday,hes in his 70,s so i guess he knows a bit about old perkins engines,ill ask a few questions.

I have tried bribing a couple of them for a cheap ex demo engine,but im told that you cant get them,Caterpiller does not allow the staff to buy the engines thatn they make at staff discount

I have a perkins 4-108. Great engine.
I had a yanmar in the past as well. Another great engine.

If I ever repower, it would be with a yanmar. Lighter, more fuel efficent, quieter and smaller than the perkins. Yeah, it won't go the hours that a perkins might, but now way in hell I am putting a volvo engine in my boat.
The other choice would be a John deere lugger, but that would be for a larger boat.

Hello, I am recommissioning my 12m, 15 Ton steel ketch "Joshua Moitessier" and in the repowering phase I am considering a Solé 74 HP naturally aspirated commercial vs a Yanmar 4JH4-TE turbo light weight engine. Aside of the advantages in durability and ease of repair of the commercial engîne I like the power and low consumption of the turbo Yanmar. Since 2005 have they shown to be as reliable as they promise?

Hi; A quick look tells me there are some experienced sailors contributing to this thread. My interest is in the Perkins M92B marine diesel. My friend has this in her Gulfstar50. We wanted to find out if there is any aftermarket fuel filter that would fit this engine. Looking to save a little. Thanks for any info.

I'm not certain where in the world you might be sailing but if you take your current filter in to an auto parts or truck parts store that serves diesel as well as gas autos/trucks they should be able to match your filter.
I've found filters for my Mercedes diesel engine at way less cost.

The reason you dont see many perkins in new sailboats is they dont have any small engines, The M92 at 86hp is the smallest and the next s the M135, ( a engine whch i had, good, but thirsty).

I am installing a Perkins 135 in my new build 65' yacht. Natural aspiration means one thing less to cause trouble, very simple to service, parts readily available. All the data I looked at suggests overall low service costs and economical running. Several big new production yachts have Perkins as an alternative.

Question: I have a 1983 4-154 that was running great, no smoke, no using oil. Pulled the fuel injector pump for rebuild (stuck wide open) and replaced a freeze plug that was right behind the pump. Put the rebuilt pump back in and got crazy overheat (pegged after 2-3 minutes of operation). Bubbles in the header tank.

And now the BIG question:
Compression on 3 cylinders is right at 300. The 4th (#2 cylinder) is right at 150. Put oil in the cylinder and no improvement.

Thoughts?

Look for bent pushrod, or bad valve clearance if nothing found head will have to come off to find burnt valve and seat.
