Re sartorst, i like the simplicity, but i thought:

1 the oily gases were undesirable and sludgy

2 that the breather hose cannot be closed -ended, because it is meant to let off excess pressure within the engine?

Those oily gasses are going right where they need to go,back in the engine to be burned just as if they were fuel,any other place the oil vapors will condense back to oil and make a big mess

ok I get that - altho I have heard that there is a risk of a 'runaway engine.' air intake can siphon oily gases and indeed oil from the sump and feed it with a vortex into the combustion chamber. a sort of feral turbo!

similarly, some people plumb the oil breather into the exhaust - which then creates a vortex and siphons the oil from the sump. it could happen...

however with a correct siphon break i suppose the gasess would burn well - altho the blow by nature of them can include water vapour from the cylinder head which i suppose is not so great?

It would take a large amount of oil caused by a catastrophic engine failure to cause a run away in which case you need to be able to shut of air supply by blocking the air intake. water vapor in those amounts will not harm your engine,as a mater of fact there are aftermarket kits for automotive applications that inject a water mixture to improve performance

Hi Erik , I had exactly the same set-up with the rain cap/screen on my air intake . I installed a proper aircleaner ( Donaldson Duralite ) which Perkins show in their owners manual to give my engine pure air , although in a marine enviroment there is not much dust . Being an ex filtration specialist and knowing what size dirt particle causes wear , l sleep better knowing my engine is properly protected .
