Reversed Polarity when connected to portable generator

I have a 16,000 btu factory installed aircon unit that is working fine on shore power. When I connect via the same shore power cable to a Generac 3000i my aircon 30 amp AC circuit indicates reverse polarity. I don’t have a reverse polarity indicator on the 30 amp AC circuit that serves boat’s 110v outlets and battery charger but the generator drives this circuit fine.

Do I need to somehow ground the generator differently?

I personally spoke with the gentleman who answered that last year and he strongly discouraged me from ever considering using a portable generator unless it was a short term / emergency kind of thing.

The generator likely had a floating ground. It's not really reversed, it's just that the neutral (white) and ground (green) wires are not connected at the source as they are in shore power. Honda's do that too. You can get a gadget that plugs into an unused outlet that connects them together or make one yourself, or just ignore it. When I assembled my cord to connect the generator, connected the two together. No more RP light.
