and therefore I will have problems?

My idea was to cross from south Africa to St Helens, then to Brazil, then to the Caribbean,

beyond all the others issues, is this a good itinerary?
What I mean is if you don't have everything together yet, you may pushing the timeline. If you're not new to sailing and you know the boat well - all is good just the crew issue. The route is good, up the East coast in the region of Saldhana and then across to St Helena and then to Forteleza. That's a total of about 3700nm.
Wish you fair winds in 2016.

From another thread you can see that jeanlou is still looking to buy a circa 20 year old cat: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ts-158580.html

Carsten

A 20 year old boat is going to time for some serious work to ensure that it is ready that trip.

Looking at used, why not something closer to Florida?

Re: South Africa to Florida

Jeanlou, as others have mentioned, most people with the knowledge of preparing a boat for an ocean crossing and teaching you how to do it and provision and sail, will expect payment and airfares to be paid for. Personally, I would not trust anybody to cross the south Atlantic as a person with sufficient knowledge if they were willing to do it for free. To put an inexperienced person in charge of your newly acquired but old vessel is laughable. If you have already purchased your dream boat, you will also need a few things to be done before the South African authorities will permit you to depart. You will need the vessel to be registered in your home state, unless you are South African. If it is an ex South African vessel, leaving the country after re-registration, you will need the vessel surveyed by a South African SAMSA safety surveyor and make the vessel fully compliant to the regulations. If the vessel is South African flagged, only a South African certified skipper may take it out the country.

So, if you cannot afford to pay a skipper or captain, you will have a very hard time fighting red tape and affording to prepare the vessel for a Cat A safety certificate so that you can depart. Those boats mentioned up-thread will all need a lot of money to make them ready for an ocean crossing, irrelevant of what the adverts say.

Re: South Africa to Florida

I agree with John T. Get a South African delivery skipper. There are many local captains with lots of experience who have done many SA to USA cat deliveries. The boat will have to be well prepared for the voyage. You will not have a problem finding local crew if the boat is good and the skipper has enough experience. You will have to be prepared to pay for a local delivery captain

Jackdale... I imagine SA currency restrictions make that un-doable..

Re: South Africa to Florida

Sorry can't make this trip, thanks for the offer. I would definitely find you a very experienced captain for this trip. Good luck! Thanks!
