Opencpn buggy, crashes, deletes columns

Hello forum

Are there any stable versions of opencpn
I am using ubuntu 20 with opncpn 5.0.0
It crashes
It locks up
It deleted the download charts column
It lost the basemap
I have tried opencpn with live linux version which locks up the worst
and on hard drive the locking up is still frequent
By locking up I mean it freezes everything, crashes the system

Re: Opencpn buggy, crashes, deletes columns

Ok I was using Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS
Had to do system update to get synaptic to load
Then searched with synaptic for opencpn

then loaded opencpn and opencpn data
it loads opencpn 5.0.0
this was very buggy and locks up

Then reinstalled system to hard drive
loaded opencpn from ppa referred to in manual at opencpn website
it is working with no problems yet, just a learning curve
thanks forum
oh it loaded opencpn 5.2.4
much better

Re: Opencpn buggy, crashes, deletes columns

ok even the fedora 34 install is a bit unstable
I found that openplotter opencpn on a pi4 w/8g ram is stable and solid
I cant comment on noobs as I am using the openplotter version debian distro basic
flashed to a sd card and have 8GB ram, and 500 GB WD Passport USB external harddrive, but am still using the 32 GB SD card for the operating system at present with charts stored on the hard drive which is over 6 GB

Re: Opencpn buggy, crashes, deletes columns

Thought I would mention to anyone interested it has two hdmi outputs of which one goes to my 42 inch monitor, I think it is 2 usb 2.0 ports, and 2 usb 3.0 ports but can run 2.0 devices. Get an multiport usb extender and can run many devices from the pi4, as long as it doesnt overload the pi4, can get self powered usb multiports. I think getting it in the minimal kit form is best, with case and fan, heat sinks, power supply and hdmi cable along with 32 GB SD card
