Chartplotter Screen Cleaning

Hi Folks:
My chartplotter (Navman 8120) is 3 years old and over the oceans it has developed 'water spots' on the screen that reduce readability.
Navman has non-existent web support.
what is best way/solution/product to clean one of these screens. I assume it is similar to a laptop computer screen but not sure.
I have tried soap and water and good squeegie without success.
Thanks for anything,
Pete

Re: Chartplotter Screen Cleaning

Depends upon what you mean by "water spots on" the screen? Do you mean black, sort of "dead" areas/circles in the LCD screen? I had them on a lapbook that got splashed and called them the "5 moons of Saturn" effect.

I could see the rest of the screen just fine outside the areas of the black "dead" circles. What caused it was water wicking its way into the space between the glass front plate and rear plate of the LCD screen panel. I looked carefully and the edges of the LCD "sandwich" screen and was not sealed against water intrusion. You would think that the manufacturer would put RTV or something around the LCD sandwich edges, but they don't.

So the idea was to buy a replacement LCD screen but it was not available so the computer was trashed and a new lapbook purchased.

If it is just surface degradation or staining,,then you can get a product to refurbish Automobile headlight covers which works wonders,,,,and there is also a product for motorcycle windshields i used to use but cant for the life of me remember what it was called,,but its out there,,easy enough to find.
Maybe anther member could jump in and suggest a product.

Re: Chartplotter Screen Cleaning

I had the same problem, which was caused by moisture inside the instrument. The solution is to get one of those small silica bags that are packed with most electronic instruments where they absorb moisture.

Take the navman apart (yeah the allenwrench screws are a bitch) and insert one of the bags. When you close the instrument back up, rub a little grease or oil on the square o-ring that is supposed to seal it.

That should cure it

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"
