No water maker no drink?

During our 4 seasons in the Medd, we filled-and drank-the local potable water, without issue. We did, however, opt for anything capped and bottled when we had the chance. But without a watermaker we were forever looking for water to top up. We now have a watermaker....a much better solution!

Wouldn't the boats without watermakers need to head to shore past the pirates. I hear watermakers work great just out of pirate range well offshore. Weird comment.

What, tides, storms and pirates in the med? wasn't like that the last time I visited for a holiday the only pirates were Egyptian taxi drivers and Italian deck chair attendants.

Yes, I'm talking about increased frequency and intensity of storms and associated damage to Marine infrastructure as well as sea level rise.

if there are going to be more storms just use a rain catcher then,much more sustainable than a watermaker

We've now sailed the Med/Carib/SoPac all managed without a watermaker & whilst drinking the tank water and to date no problems due to either contamination or unavailability.

On a few occassions we've been obliged to pay for potable water, though after fifteen years I doubt if we've yet spent the equivalent cost of one filter-membrane for a watermaker.

This is conventional wisdom; as well as something I have done for as long as I can remember.

But I just got back from crewing on a boat in the Baja Ha-Ha (don't drink the water in Mexico) and was told instead of using bleach use a cap full of Listerine. I have no idea if this works or not.

Any of you smart guys wanna chime in?

Isn’t that a good way to get sick? What if the water is contaminated with giardiasis, cholera or E. coli.......

My replacement membrane was $350, if you spent much more that $25 a year we are even. This, of course, ignores the value of your time as well as the convenience factor of not having to sail or motor to a place to fill up.
Granted the membrane will not last 15 years, but the old one was 7 years old and still working just fine. We only replaced it since we were going to spend the next 4 months in the Bahamas and didn’t want it to die out there.

Install a Daulton filter. Best there is. Can have bad water in the tank but better than bottle water coming out the tap.

We plan on installing a water maker for long distance travel, but currently we’re on dock water and tankage. Our water goes through a series of filters and a water softener when plumbed into the boat, and we also fill our tanks through those filters before heading off the dock. We replaced the 40 year old leaking stainless tank with two poly tanks a few years ago.

We just made a YouTube video not too long ago about our freshwater system and cleaning out the storage tanks.
