Yanmar water separator filter 4230-0000

Hello,

I have a new boat, a 1985 Lippincot30, that came with a primary diesel filter labelled Yanmar water separator filter 4230-0000.

I am trying to replace it, but searching online I can only find replacement of the entire case, for about $150 (i.e., https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-YAN...YAAOSws-5c7pO4).

Shouldn't I be able to replace this filter without the case? If the idea is to replace it every 200 hours or so or every other oil change, it seems to me that replacing the entire case is not a good idea.

If I can simply replace the filter, is there a different brand filter other then the Yanmar 4230-0000 or 423B that would fit into this case?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Rodrigo

addThere will be another filter that fits in that case. I dont know where in the world you are but go to a place that sells truck parts & take the filter & housing if possible & theyshould be able to find you the equivalent.
If that doesn't work you can use one of these Racor knockoffs
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000544248395.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.71592 d64DdAPUZ&algo_pvid=bbbc160e-9fc2-42cf-886f-e07610e1a067&algo_expid=bbbc160e-9fc2-42cf-886f-e07610e1a067-1&btsid=0ab50f6115896863592977103e3232&ws_ab_test= searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_
.What size engine is it? If you have clean tanks & fuel from a clean source& I imagine a 20hp engine or less you should be able to get a lot more than 200 hours life from it especially if you use a filter funnel when filling the tank.

Thank you, Compass, it's good to know I can use less expensive alternatives.

Still, isn't there a way to just buy the filter without the case? I hate throwing things away when they are still serviceable. Maybe it's just me.

Thanks again!

Sorry, I did not reply to your question.

I have a Yanmar 2gmf, with 13hp. I'm just going by the engine manual maintenance calendar.

Yes absolutely you can buy just the filter & not the housing. Thats why you take it to an auto supply place & they should be able to help you out. Yanmar won't make the filter, it's just got their label on it. Looks like a Racor copy to me.
It depends on the assistant at the parts place, head for the old guy not the pimply one with his head in a phone screen is my tip for someone who will try to help you.
Some of them just aren't interested if you can't give the vehicle model & year.
Mind you I'm talking from an New Zealand perspective, might be different in the USA if that's where you are.
Hope that helps

Yes the maintenance calendar can be a bit OTT. Eg. it says replace hoses every 4 years for our Yanmar. Well the original hose to the fuel filter lasted 37 years on our Yanmar. I think they would be talking about the engine mounted filter for the 200 hrs. That filter looks like a primary filter, possibly 30 micron. But do you have 2 fuel filters?
Not saying not to follow the manuals maintenance schedule in general but experience teaches me that some things aren't need at such short intervals.
Your engine probably only uses about 1.5 litres per hr so doesn't pump a lot of fuel through the filter therefore they last longer.
If the filter is the one nearest the tank I'd get a 30micron ( assuming you have 2) & if its the one nearest the engine I'd get a 10 micron or less
Hope that helps

Re: Yanmar water separator filter 4230-0000

Correct, the aforementioned filter is my primary filter.. My engine also has a secondary filter, which is easy to replace (and have done so already).

Yes, your tip to go to a good ol' truck shop may be a good one, and ask for the older fella to assist. In the US, however, few are willing to go out of their way. But I take your point about these filters lasting quite a while. I drained mine and the diesel came out pretty clean from the looks of it.

Anywho, great advice, Compass.

happy to help as others have helped me on CF
Googled your new boat, looks nice & sounds good in review.
Yes hard to get people to go out of their way here too but if you go down the racks of fuel filter housings in a chain auto place like O'Reillys you might be able to find one yourself. Once you find the part no. of a major filter manufacturer it's easy to find more on a cross reference list. There is no need to be reamed by Yanmar. I found it cheaper to buy a used housing & use Baldwin filters than get Yanmars. Have an 18 micron primary & a 5 micron engine filter.
I think there is a workshop manual for your engine in the CF library to download for free. They have lots of good info for you.

A quick look on Ebay came up with this that looks like it would fit yours:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement....c100005.m1851
Maybe try an outboard dealers place too
Good luck with your search & please post back what you find

It looks like a Racor R20
https://www.marineenergy.com.au/prod...r20t-10-micron

RACOR R20*

* = R, S, or P and corresponds to a 2, 10 or 30 micron filter size respectively.

Try a NAPA store/ http://www.nfhconnect.com/Lookup/FilterBySize
Their "Gold" filters are premium WIX and excellent quality. Much better choice than cheap Chinesium ones.

Re: Yanmar water separator filter 4230-0000

Toss that thing or put in the dinghy to filter the outboards fuel.
Buy a Racor 500 like 90% of boats use and buy a dozen filters and keep aboard if you ever leave home or are away from your towing service.
Reason to by a Racor 500 is it’s the widest used there is and parts and filters are available just about everywhere.
Buy a dozen filters as they are cheapest that way and one day you may get a bad load of fuel and may need a bunch of filters.

However if your not cruising, don’t worry about it, but there certainly is filters cartridges available, I bet even Yanmar will sell them to you, and I bet that a Racor will fit too, either an R12 or a R20, but it looks like an R20 to me too.

Re: Yanmar water separator filter 4230-0000

Awesome! I just didn't know if Yanmar required a specific type of primary filter. I see now that the lower the micron number, the smaller the particles it can filter, but ultimately it does not matter what brand or even measure it is, as long as the diesel flow is similar, which most of these filters are able to handle for these type of engines.

Live and learn, and your help makes sailing (and maintenance) some much easier :-)

Re: Yanmar water separator filter 4230-0000

Racor 500FG are excellent filters/water separators. They're also $200 and the o-ring kits are about $50. The aftermarket Chinese 500 style ones are definitely built to a price. No where near the same quality as a Racor but then they're also cheap and usually work OK.

It's nice to have a clear bowl to see if you have water in the fuel but I have used an FRAM assembly that came with my 1980 boat from the factory without issue for over 25 years. Just drain the bowl every couple of days to inspect and you would be fine. Or you could put in a clear screen strainer upstream of the filter to see what['s going on. This is a popular option if you have algae in the tanks. The screen catches a lot of stuff that would clog up the filter. Ideally you have clean fuel and don't need to see or replace filters often. If convenience is worth it then the $200 might be OK for you versus the $12 for a good quality filter element for what you have. Lots of ways to solve the problem.

Re: Yanmar water separator filter 4230-0000

Where I sail, in the Chesapeake Bay, diesel quality is good. I suppose if one sails in certain area of the world where the purity of the diesel is questionable, it would be important to invest in the expensive cases/filter elements.

For my purposes, I believe, it would be enough to keep the current case, just clean the clear base, and replace the element every couple of years. Having spares, as a64pilot suggests, is never a bad idea.

Would I be wrong in assuming the above?

Thanks.

In my opinion, no. But even with clean fuel little stuff like a dry o-ring on your fill cap can let water into the tank. Use a good biocide regularly like Biobor, buy fuel from a well frequented source and you should be fine.
