Novice looking for a 36+ to kick around in the Caribbean

I just wanted to get some folks current opinion on a what's a decent boat if equipped to sail the East Coast and around the Caribbean. Hunter? Catalina, CS, Pearson etc etc.. I've don't some research here in the forum and it seems for every topic that says a certain boat is good for xyz there is another topic that says its not. So I'm just looking for some updated thoughts? Any on topic comments are appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Yes, what those guys said.

You aren't planning to race around the Horn, you're looking for a boat for the Caribbean. Avoid sailing in hurricanes, watch out for winter fronts and you'll be fine with 99% of the boats on the market. Main concern will be the condition of the boat. The best made boat in the world can be a nightmare if allowed to deteriorate.

Red face Re: Novice looking for a 36+ to kick around in the Caribbean

There are plenty of 38-41' charter boats around already in the Caribbean. i would go to one of the more reputable dealers and make personal contact them via telephone. Beneteaus and Jeanneaus are the best.
Go for the largest you feel comfortable with and that suites your budget. Most importantly once you find a boat that you really like make certain you have a top surveyor and do an in and out of the water survey. Look for a boat that has a very decent engine. i recommend Yanmar because of the availability of mechanics and parts. Additionally, I strongly recommend you find a boat with a good windlass and all chain. Check you refrigeration/freezer well.

See you out there......and don't anchor over my line!

No, not a boat just because she likes it or because you like it. Look for a circa 1974-79 Person sloop. An older C&C40 would be great. Any well built boat with a lead not Iron keel and the mast stepped through the deck and at the keel. The lead will enhance the righting moment and the mast will be stronger. Get a deep keel boat not a "swing keel". Your draft will be about 6 to 7 feet. By this time most engines will have been rebuilt though the rigging may not have and if not should be given a careful look for a host of things but best to replace the standing rigging. A good dodger and a excellent well plumbed head. I could go on however will spare you.
Every where you plan on going I have been and promise you that those basics will pay huge dividends.
If a concern about motion sickness I recommend saltine crackers and Perrier Water which is lightly carbonated and allows the saltine cracker is super bland and the salt on the cracker helps replace salt you will be losing. At one time or another everyone feels not so wonderful.
Fair winds and great sailing. Peter

Find one that you like at a price you can afford. Check out the Irwins.

Get the mother of all flare guns. The 12 gauge is a not so great and the 25mm much better and go long on the parachute flares. A commercial ships store would have something better I would think.

I second Michelsen's advice. Even in the Carib you never know what you're going to get so a solid, stable, deep keeled vessel is just good insurance for safety and comfort. And be sure it has a good depth sounder!

No aft cabin boats of less than 48 or 50 feet. What is your budget.

Re: Novice looking for a 36+ to kick around in the Caribbean

I was reading the forum a few days ago and there was a CS 36 Merlin for sale. Asking price was 36k. Ironically it was being sold by a Youtube vlogging couple under the name "Monday Never". I've been following them for close to a year on their Youtube channel and know that they put some good work into the boat. I think it might be worth a look.
