Australia to Indonesia to Solomons to Fiji?

Just wondering how feasible it is to sail from Australia to Indonesia, then head east to Solomons and continue to more of the South Pacific Islands.
Is there a time of year when this is more possible or pleasant?
Preliminary thinking seems to suggest that Australia to Indonesia, then Malaysia etc is often a one-way trip...?

Re: Australia to Indonesia to Solomons to Fiji?

There are dozens of threads about sailing to Polynesia, prevailing winds, etc. might want to do a search.

NZ to Tonga is common.

Brisbane to Ghizo SI also a common route, then plunk west through PNG and then to Indonesia.

So depends on your ultimate destination

Re: Australia to Indonesia to Solomons to Fiji?

Thank you.
I am aware of many routes (and threads) to Pacific Islands.
My question was about something slightly different.
North of Australia is usually a choice -
go left to Indonesia, then continue to Malaysia, Thailand etc.
Or go right, to Louisiades, Solomons, Vanuatu, Fiji, etc
I am interested to know if it is realistic to consider going left (Indonesia), then going east to Solomons etc

Have a look at opencpn and climatology plugin for clues on wind direction/strength by month.

Re: Australia to Indonesia to Solomons to Fiji?

North of Cairns and across the top of Australia to about Darwin the SE trade winds dominate for most of the year. To get ro the eastern end of the Louisiades most folks leave from around Townsville and do the voyage on a reach.

From Australia the Solomons are best reached by leaving from at least as far south as southern Queensland. Most folks avoid that part of the world during the cyclone season.

Indonesia and Malaya are fairly easy to get to from Gove or Darwin but can be harder to return from because of the influence of the SE and NE trades either side of the equator.

From Indo to the Solomon’s you could use the NW monsoon . Go over the top of Papua through PNG to the Solomon’s .
You wouldn’t want to be in Vanuatu / Fiji before May as it’s cyclone season. The SE trades will then prevail , but we met a fair few boats going the ‘wrong way’ last year. Just wait for a westerly change and keep island hopping
