Pearson 10M vs Hunter Cherubini 37

I am buying a new old boat. I am moving to BC and am looking for a good blue water boat that i can handle single hand.
I have found 2 that I like a Pearson 10m and a Hunter Cheubini 37. The Pearson looks spartan but has a skeg hung Rudder and larger tanks. the Hunter is larger and a little more comfortable. I primarily sail single handed.
the Price difference is about $5000. As we are all dealing with covid-19 i have to wait a bit before i head west. From what i can gather both boats have decent spec's.
? Would they be a decent blue water boat and how are they to live on.
I currently own a Tanzer 26 that i sail and live on in the summer in Manitoba.

Re: Pearson 10M vs Hunter Cherubini 37

I havent sailed the 10M (lots of other Pearsons, just not that one).

The 37 Cutter is a great design, but there are some fit & finish aspects which are less than ideal (presumably due to being built by Hunter). One of the most annoying is those damn plastic portholes...a bunch if them.

I used to own a 37 Cutter deep draft (I hear many negative comments on the shoal draft version). Loved it. Excellent sailing characteristics: decent in light air, well behaved in heavy stuff (sailed mine in up to hurricane force conditions), very well balanced (I could balance mine, set the wheel brake, and walk away from the helm for at least a few minutes in calm sea state...she would track like a freight train). I cruised my extensively, no transoceanic crossings, but plenty of multi-day runs in GOM and N Carib. I know directly of several that have done transoceanic runs and I would not hesistate to take a well outfitted one across.

There are several threads here that discuss the 37 Cutter, give those a look. Also a very active owners group on the Internet with lots of posted info. I do not have the URL handy, but a search should turn it up.

i've owned 10M hull #6 since 1987. Some mods should be made for Blue Water cruising. The basic boat is solid, easy to work on and will take you anywhere you want to go.

The 37c should have more tank capacity.
Twin water tanks and a 44 gallon fuel tank.
Living abroad the 37c has a separate shower stall.
I have owned two 37c's deep and shoal draft.
The deep will out point the shoal but not by much.
The better more attentive sailor will be a bigger difference.
The cutter rig will be easier to solo sail also.
Still my favorite boat out of many I have owned.

The 37 Cutter is a special boat for me too. Lots of great adventures aboard mine.

As I recall, it had about 100 gallon water capacity. Thats also whats posted on sailboatdata.com.

The layout of the deck with high gunnels and water fills located toward the aft end also make filling by rain catchment super easy. Just give the decks a quick scrub, plug the scuppers, and the entire deck becomes water catchmment. A heavy rain fills the tanks very quickly.

The is also a Hunter 37 owners group with lots of info and owner mods.

I had the tanks backwards the 37c does have larger tanks.. I am stuck in limbo like the everyone else. Smell of salt water is just a dream for a few months. I think the 37C is the boat for me. This is a sloop but i wounder if they have just removed the second forestay?

I have a dock neighbor with the 37c. It is a stiff boat and he doesn't typically reef until 20kts. However, he did have problems with oil-canning in the bow, so he beefed up the bow section with stringers and ribs. He also replaced the leaky plastic ports with good ones from newfound metals. Other than that, he seems pleased with it.

Yes, those damn plastic ports...rip em out 1st thing if you buy one. At least the deck hatches are of proper metal construction.

Ive experienced some oil canning on the 37C in really severe conditions (hurricane strength winds, big ass seas), but none other than that. Its not unique to the 37C, Ive encountered it in other boats too in really bad conditions.

They are indeed stiff boats and very well behaved in heavy weather.

(Just for grins, I Iooked up my old 37C...she is still USCG registered, so someone I hope is enjoying her. Built in 1982 and still going!).

Yes sometimes people take off the staysail stay.
In light air areas it may make sense if you just fairweather day sail.

I have heard the ports, mast steps, and soft spots on deck can be an issue. But they sail nice and can point well. I wish the rudder had a skeg but that is life.

Yeah they do...take off the most useful sail on the boat!
