Changed to Hunter 37.5/ Yanmar, now know nothing!

After 26 years with the same Catalina 30 Tall Rig, I know everything. What and where to buy spares, what aftermarket parts are OK and what parts I need to buy OEM. I know every hose, wire, etc.

Now, we have procured a 1994 Hunter 37.5 and I know nothing. And, it needs work- as in, a refit.

The 30 YO Universal (Kubota) M25XP in the Catalina was rock solid; still is. Aside from maintenance, the only thing ever done was the water pump. Of course, I have spares not only for maintenance, but a "just in case" parts that have never been used.

With the Yanmar 3JH2E, no idea best place to buy maintenance parts. I'm leary of the aftermarket impeller/ maintenance kits on Ebbbbay.

Hunter Owners has a few parts, but it's no Catalina Direct.

So...any clues from Hunter 37.5 and/or Yanmar owners?

Thanks!

Re: Changed to Hunter 37.5/ Yanmar, now know nothing!

With no prompt reply fro someone with spacific knowledge, let me make a general try.

Probably, you did it with the Universal/Westerbeke/Kubota the same way I did. Make internet searches, with particular attention to images of the parts. Find the cheap parts that look like they fit. Give it a try. Yanmar did not design it's own pumps, starter, throttle linkage, alternators, you name it. They didn't even design their own pistons and rings. They used stock industry items, and so can you.

I can't help you on the Yanmar, because I learned it on a Universal M25 just like you did.

I have a different Yanmar, so cannot help directly. I will say that for certain parts like filters, impellers, and oil it doesn't pay to use cheap alternatives. Get the best you can find.

In case you need a manual..

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/73...h2-Series.html

For parts and service kits..

https://dieselpartseurope.com/websho...ts/service-kit

https://www.yanmar.com/us/parts/

I should add.. I often contact commercial truck or tractor service centres with the part numbers.. usually much cheaper than the marine suppliers on filters etc.. obviously this won't apply with things like impellors etc.
Volvo, Deere, Westerbeake etc..

Ah, the new boat quandry!

Well, guess it will be an opportunity for a new learning experience and keeping those brain neurons firing! "A journey of 10,000 miles begins with the first step"

Of course, you already know about fellow Hunter owners as well as this Forum as resources.

Fair winds on your new journey - and following seas, of course.

One question, though: Why didn't you just pass along all your spares to the owner of your Catalina? I mean, any engine stuff is not going to be much use on a Yanmar.... and Catalina's parts are mostly Catalina-specific.

Congrats on your new boat!
