Hello from new member in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with a us yachts US 25

Hi Folks,

my lovely wife and I brought a us yachts us 25 and are fixing this beauty up here in Calgary. Alas we can only sail locally 6 months of the year, and then smaller maintenance work while its sub zero. It's a great boat, handles Ok and is fun to sail.

Things to do.
-locate a source of manuals or information, more than sailboatdata

remove portlights (x 4) and replace or re-bed, them leak
-all lines back to the cabin roof, need a cost effective source of clutches for this one
-add exit rollers to the mast where the halyards come out of the mast
-work out how to built an outboard remote control for our Nissan NSF8A3. Its so far away from the tiller to be able to reach down that docking is a hail mary as we pull the motor cut out
-rewire the thing
-work out how to fix up the interior to be able to live on for a few days - sailing camping!
-get the trailer brakes working properly

As a sometimes Calgary resident I welcome you to the fold here Justin. Sounds like you’ve got a few projects to keep you busy through the long, cold months.

I assume you’re sailing on the Glenmore Reservoir, or do you trailer elsewhere?

Re: Hello from new member in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with a us yachts US 25

Hi Mike,

yep you know Calgary!

We race San Juan 21's on Glenmore, club GSC (we are crew, friend is skipper) , our boat (Baked Beans) lives at club CYC at Chestermere, we have had her out a few time to lake Newel at Brooks too and really want to try lake Flathead which looks very cool (Montana).

We also have been crewing on the same friends Jeanneau 389 (Ride the Wind) for the past few years taking part in Swiftsure International out of Victoria, B.C and Round Saltspring races. Flying the big asymmetrical at night and getting the trimming right is really tricky, but great fun.

Now we seriously have the bug and both passed our ASA104s this year so now certified dangerous and every time we sailing realising that there is more and more to learn - and not just trimming.

Next up we need to get out on the ocean for a few weeks to see how much we like like!

Well a big welcome from your slightly northern neighbor. We hail from just outside Edmonton.
5 years ago we bought a San Juan 7.7 from a Calgary guy. He raced the 23's I believe, in sylvan. We Sailed the crap out of that boat and are now living on a 42 ' catamaran.
Glen more sailboats is the best resource I know in the area for info and parts. Otherwise internet is a resource to kill the boredom of waiting out the winter.
Hopefully spring comes early this year for you.

Yes we make heavy use of both Glenmore Sailboats and Sailwest, downside is just the simple cost.

Thank you, only problem is that I chose to live 1000Km from you smarter folks and then get the sailing bug :-(

Now I shall spend the winter here in frozen Alberta scrounging parts and looking for a really big shed to work on Baked Beans our US Yachts US 25....

My first boat was a US27 which I purchased in 2006 and sold 5 years later. Researched the company and its models extensively prior to purchase. At the time there was an active forum for USY and its homely cousin Buccaneer owners. But I'm afraid they are either offline or not active as they don't come up on google as they used to. If I get my old computer up and running it may have the bookmarked URLs of that forum and more info.

I also should have a bunch of USY brochures in PDF and JPG formats. They have all the specs and rigging info. Will try to find them and will let you know.

Very cool to hear SteadyEddie and much better than today as I look out the window there is an inch of the stupid white stuff with the weather service promising another 8-9 inches of the stuff.

Our boat is parked at CYC/Chestermere, and despite being on the hard the winters we have in Calgary make it really hard to work on.

Need a friend with a huge heated garage so we can work on the boat
