Can I convert C-Map 93 to C-Map Max?

I am going to buy a chartplotter which reads C-Map Max on a SD card.

I am already using free C Map 93' for OpenCPN.

Can I convert the current free C-Map to C-Map Max format in a SD card?

Any info is much appreciated?

Thank you.

Eric

In case you are wondering why would anyone using free OpenCPN want a chartplotter, well my AIS unit has stop working and I am considering buying one of those MATSUTEC AIS/GPS/Charplotter unit. The problem is the chartplotter side reads C-Map Max.

....so you are going to by brand new chart plotter and use with it pirated cm93, probably downloaded from some Russian website and last time updated 2010.

and by the way, if conversion does not work, you always can get it here

At least @ericoh88 filled in his personal data and @Cruz hides behind an empty personal data record... his answer smells very commercial as well. ..!!

Thank you Gruz and Tricolor for your info and reply.

The cost of replacing my Digital Yacht AIT1000 to AIT 1500 will cost me about USD 650 with shipping.

A super duper vespermarine smart Watchmate AIS/GPS cost about USD 1,200

A matsutec HP-528A AIS/GPS is only USD 330 (with shipping).

A matsutec HP-6299A AIS/GPS/Chartplotter +C-MAP MAX is USD 775 (with shipping)

OpenCPN with cm93 is only a backup, same goes for the Navionics on the iPhones.

Easy decision is simply get the USD 330 option for the ais/gps transponder.

OpenCPN is a very good charting program where I do all my route planning. FWIW, a very good friend who did RTW said the commercial C-MAP and cm93 is exactly same.

Gentlemen, appreciate your comments.

fair wind and calm seas

I have 2 units of Raymarine C90W chartplotter which has the broken round button mouse.

https://www.marinechandlery.com/c-ma...outh-east-asia

C-MAP MAX is quoted 269.95 pounds = USD 355.80

Matsutec HP-528A AIS/GPS USD 330 with air freight

Matsutec HP-6299A AIS/GPS/Chartplotter USD 420 with air freight
C-Map Max USD 355.80 => Total USD 775.80

My old faulty Digital Yacht Pro AIT1000 / equivalent AIT1500 USD 526 (no shipping )

Will he didn't do the RTW recently or he is just plain wrong. The up to date CMap charts are far better than CM93 in many areas around the world. We have them both.

RTW sailors are not famous for working along coasts, working through narrow channels with coral reef all around, looking for anchorages, or spending time in glorious out of the way places.

Here're two quick screen grabs to show the difference between:

1. CMAP 93 v 2, the most recent version that can be viewed using OpenCPN (meaning that the chart data is from 2010 or earlier); and

2. CMAP 93 v 3, the current commercial product.

The location I've chosen is the Jomard Entrance aka Jomard Channel, in Milne Bay Province of PNG. The Louisiade Archipelago is to the E; New Guinea to the W.

In late April or early May 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy steamed south through the Jomard Entrance, aiming to support the efforts of Imperial Japan to take Port Moresby (PNG) and Tulagi (in Solomon Islands).

So real soon we'll be celebrating the 77th anniversary of one of the most significant sea battles of the Pacific theatre of WW2. The Battle of the Coral Sea. No winners. But IJN support for the capture of Port Moresby did not go ahead. And the industrial economy of Imperial Japan could not recover from its losses of capital ships. The US economy and the USN could.

The IJN did not have charts as good as CMAP 93 v 2 (see: Jomard Channel CM93 v2 1:119000.jpg). But the IJN clearly had better charts than their enemies, so they steamed through.

At a scale of 1:119,000, the E side of the chartlet is on the brink of being overzoom. The W side (see that strip of deep blue?) is at maximum zoom.

Of what benefit are the latest charts?

Look at Jomard Channel 93 v 3.jpg. It's not yet close to overzoom. I've another few zoom steps to go, each revealing new detail.

These days a surprisingly big number of commercial ships steam through the Jomard Channel. And the reason they do is the quality of large scale charting. As shown on the CMAP 93 v 3 chart - see the indication of the shipping channel.

You have choices ... in parts of the planet, the charts have not changed significantly. In other parts, you'd be advantaged to have the latest. And the latest are not on paper.

At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself the Dirty Harry question: just how lucky do you feel, punk?

If you've nothing better to read, take a Captain Cook at:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Coral_Sea

https://www.abmc.gov/news-events/new...ttle-coral-sea (from 2 years ago)

What do you after that is your business.

My home town has a memorial at which we commemorate the Battle of the Coral Sea.

I'll be there on 4 May. Weeping.

We shall not forget.

Paul L : Thank you for your comments.

Alan Mighty: Great info. Thank you.

My friend on the rally was going to a river mouth via short cut which is shallow but deep enough for boats to pass. The cat went through and another mono ahead went in with no problem. His Navionics did not show anything. So off he went in and hit bottom. Later he checked cm93, there was marking for submerged rock. The story continues.

The agent for Matsutec says the chartplotter can read cm93. So I will just order one unit and try out. If it does not work, I will use the AIS/GPS side until some day I have the budget to buy the C-MAP Max.

Re: Can I convert C-Map 93 to C-Map Max?

Ericoh, please report back if it does work with CM93.

Regarding those folks who are advocating for the newest charts and tech.
Surely best to have it, but please also keep in mind that not all of us have the funds for all the latest and greatest stuff.

Better CM93 2010 than an even older outdated old paper chart.

Still, even before chart plotters and high tech surveys people got to places.

In 2004 I sailed to the Black Sea with photocopied black&white charts from Bellingham Chart Printers.
To add a bit of luxury I used a colored pencil to make the land & rocks better visible.
Some of the charts were clearly based on hand drawings from the Admiralty.
Still made it back to Slovenia safely...

Not saying this is good practice, but even without the latest gear you can have great cruising. Just replace the high tech with extra savety margins and beeing cautious.

yes, only difference is that you have "notices to mariners" and can keep your paper charts up to date.

"As an officer and a navigator, I have ever looked with horror on neglect and indolence, and have never yet crossed the seas without that foresight which is necessary to the well doing of the voyage…"

In these few words Captain Bligh described the essential nature of good seamanship. Proper care of charts is part of that necessary foresight, and keeping your charts up to date according to the latest Notices to Mariners.

Re: Can I convert C-Map 93 to C-Map Max?

No-one stops you from updating your electronic charts.
OpenCPN for example has a layer system you can use for that.
Same source of info, notices for mariners.

Many chart suppliers offer updates too.

Every cowboy chooses his or her pony.

Still, it sucks that Europeans need to pay for their charts and can not get them free as in the US. We paid for their creation already by paying taxes...

if you can not afford, try something else... dog walking, gardening, siting in the park and reading books about sailing, cross stitching, knitting, get boyfriend, husband......

Re: Can I convert C-Map 93 to C-Map Max?

try Navionics on the smartphones - "affordable" and very good. I have puchased mine some 7 years ago and never renew the subs. Now that there is a new feature with Active Captain, I just might renew.

I have Navionics on several phones and iPad as "backups".
