Beneteau 461 water tanks busted
I have a 2000 Beneteau 461 with 3 water tanks. 2 under the floor boards in the main cabin. 1 under the V-berth in the forward cabin. Each one holds approximately 70+ gal. This winter I left them almost filled so to be able to use the boat on weekends across from Annapolis, MD. Never had a problem before but this year everything froze and expanded. Now the tanks are leaking. On a separate note I also just replaced the leaking water heater.
I just filled the tanks but before the fresh water pump would stop building up pressure the tanks emptied in the bilge.
I am not sure where the leaks are and how to repair ? The water tanks are glasses in.
Ant advice is very much appreciated.

Remove and replace.

Re: Beneteau 461 water tanks busted
Start finding the leaks, check the hoses and hose connections first before doing anything to the tank.

Re: Beneteau 461 water tanks busted
If you are lucky you have split the hoses and not the tanks. You might start by isolating the tanks (presumably there are existing valves for that purpose?) and trying to confirm where the leaks are. You may be able to get a start by using a shopvac, leafblower, or compressor to "fill" each section with air instead of water, and then look/feel/listen to see if there's hissing or airflow from the tank or the lines. If there is a shut-off at each tank, you can of course just isolate each one, fill it, and see if that holds. Depending on the plumbing access, sometimes you can drop a collapsible bladder in an existing tank, rather than having to cut the whole thing out to replace it.

Re: Beneteau 461 water tanks busted
Each tank in the main cabin under the floor boards is essentially two tanks. There is 1.5" pipe connecting the two half tanks. I enclose a picture. it maybe this pipe is not sealed in well enough and leaks into the bilge. Problem is, I may have to cut an access hole in the top of the tank. The existing one is too far away to reach the pipe on the one side.
I will pour a few gallons in the tank and evaluate further. Hoses are all tight.
Thanks

Re: Beneteau 461 water tanks busted
This looks like a likely culprit. Easy to test. Tape over this with some watertight tape in one of the tanks and fill some water in the same. Or just re-bed the pipe on both sides and try then.
Ideally, I would think the pipe should protrude the same on both sides?

Re: Beneteau 461 water tanks busted
We just had a leak in our fresh water system and it was a split hose. Also changed out the hot water heater as it was 20 yrs old. Once we found the leak it was an easy fix, tied the new hose to the old one and pulled it through. But we live in Florida, so not due to frozen water.

Re: Beneteau 461 water tanks busted
The hoses seem fine but I will replace them just to be sure. Most likely they are the original ones. I did replaced the leaking water heater.
Thank you and Cheers

Re: Beneteau 461 water tanks busted
I have a 99 461. The tanks are part of the inner structure of the hull so I don't think you cracked the tank. The hoses to the pump come out of the top of the tank, not out of the bottom. The tanks have inspection holes in the top of them so you should be able to look in each tank and check the level. I always have water in the bilge after rain as it comes down the inside of the mast. You might want to check that out. Good luck!

Lovely idea, red in the port tank, green in the starboard, and equal parts in the fwd tank.
There's a chance, Peter, that it is only the caulking around that pipe protrusion, let's hope it's that easy! Good luck with it.
Ann
