Does anyone know about this boatyard in South Africa?

I bought a boat built in Cape Town in 1989.

With my previous boat, I contacted the builder (locally) and they gave me the original designs and blueprints. It made a really nice decoration and I got some useful information out of it.

I figured I'd do the same. This boat was built in 1989 at Fortuna Boats in Cape Town. It seems they have closed down, went out of business, changed names or were bought by another builder.

Does anyone have any info on this? I realise it is a bit of a long shot.

The boat is a Bruce Roberts (an Offshore 44), but it is a one of a kind, no hull number. I contacted Bruce, and he sent me to his website https://www.bruceroberts.com/public/...escription.htm where there are a few Offshore 44 designs, but none of these were mine.

I'm guessing his design has changed over the years, or the builder customized it.

Thanks in advance for any tips or info!

As far as the builder "pirating" the boat plans the same accusation has been made against an Australian firm who denies the charge. (They claim they bought the rights to the designs when they bought an Australian (sunsidiary?) of Roberts Boat Plans). As far as I know no legal action has been taken which surprises me a little but then taking another to court for breach of copyright for pinching a design can be difficult if the design is not exactly the same.

Re: Does anyone know about this boatyard in South Africa?

I had a ROBERTS 45 HULL DECK , with bulkheads manufactured for me at FORTUNA BOAT BUILDERS in CAPE TOWN S.AFRICA in 1980 .
FORTUNA TOOK 7 MONTHS TO COMPLETE MY ORDER .
The hull and deck were well manufactured, supposedly to Loyds of LONDON Specifications, [WHICH I SUSPECT NOW WAS A WAY FOR FORTUNA TO CHARGE EXTRA FEES , for a process they never even adhered to , as well as , so I’ve since read blogs about the royalties which I Paid to FORTUNA , which apparently were not passed on to BRUCE ROBERTS !
Nevertheless, the boat turned out to be very well made , and I was completely satisfied with it.
The boat was transported to Johannesburg, where I proceeded to complete the build .
I completed the boat in April 1982 and launched it successfully in Richards Bay , Harbour the same month. ( RECORDS OF THE VESSEL ARE PROBABLY AVAILABLE FROM ZULULAND YACHT CLUB RICHARDS BAY.
I proceeded to get the mast and rigging completed by PAUL GREEN MASTS / DURBAN .
After successfully completing sea trials, and shake -down cruises in and out of RICHARDS BAY , we successfully sailed nonstop to KNYSNA , where I was employed by KNYSNA YACHT BUILDERS for about a year.
Due to an unfortunate motor vehicle accident , and subsequent medical expenses etc , in 1983 , I was regrettably forced to sell the vessel .
The registered name of the yacht at that time was DREAMER .
