Fiji cyclone pits

Hi all, Fiji has just opened up to yachts if certain criteria are met. This gives me another option.

I've reserved a cyclone pit at Vuda point marina and plan to leave Sukha there during next cyclone season. I reserved it as soon as I was able as I'm assuming they will get booked out with all the boats wanting to get north.

So for those that have been there, what are your thoughts on the cyclone pits regarding vessel safety if a cyclone were to hit?

Are the boats supported well?

All opinions and infomation welcome.

Cheers Dale
Sukha.

Re: Fiji cyclone pits

Pits work well.
Three seasons, one direct hit Cat 2, one near miss Cat 3.

If the fit is good a bunch of car and / or truck tyres supports the vessel.
A couple of short Acro props for fin keels with spade rudders is good.

Bow slightly up to ensure decks and cockpit drain during rain storms.
Screen your cockpit drains.

Consider the potential for tidal surge and damage from less well secured objects.

Every bit of passing debris will find it's way into the mud at the bottom of your hole.

Keep your seacocks closed; helps keep vermin out.

Access to the deck is easy so be vigilant about security.

Pits at Lautoka were powered so running a domestic AC helped prevent mildew and rot.
Vuda is very humid.

Re: Fiji cyclone pits

I was there last year Dale and the pits looked good. If I remember correctly the hull sat on tyres? I would be fairly confident leaving my yacht there. There is a pretty good Sunday session at the Bar as well. More chance of being wrecked at the bar than on land!
Cheers

Re: Fiji cyclone pits

Thanks guys for the input.

Humidity and mold always worry me when leaving the boat, never left her for more than a couple of mths. Will pay someone to keep her sorted.
