New Owner - 1972 Morgan Out Island Ketch 41'

Any other Morgan 41 Out Island owners here?

We just got it the end of Jan. Good deal over all. Traded a car and 10k for it. Hull in decent shape. Never a lot of water in the bilge. Engine is perkins 6-354 diesel and runs decent. High hours and smokes a little on start up but quickly goes away. Servicing it now. Interior layout is nice, just needs updating and cleaning and systems hooked up and tidied up. Will try and post some pics when I get a chance to. This is the walk over model - center cockpit, rear king berth with head and two cabins forward. 13.5 beam, 4.25' draft. Looking forward to getting her on the hard to get work finished. Divers will be there tomorrow to inspect hull and scrape barnacles.

Thanks!

Wayne

Thank you! It’s old and needs lots of paint and faring but overall we are happy with it.

Nice boat! A friend had one. I spent a couple week-long vacations on it in VIs many years ago...

Congratulations. Love the ketch center cockpit concept, as a concept. Never have sailed one. Looking forward to the day I do.

Yours looks nice, and depending on the car you traded in (late model Lamborghini? Used AMC Gremlin?), you got a great deal.

Thank you! Was a 2003 Subaru Baja. Car was a Vermont car soooooo.... great runner but was not beautiful underneath. But I was up front on everything. So total I have about 13k in the boat alone not including what I am dumping in right now getting her ready to motor up the ICW to the yard

There is an active facebook group for the Morgan 41 OI. It's a good place to see ideas on how to do/change things.

I also purchased an underpriced Morgan that is a lot of work, but a great boat to own.

My associate (now deceased) had one and he really liked it. Of course, he used it for poker, women, and parties. Rarely went sailing.

I helped him replace the plastic portlight frames with bronze ones. Really looked snazzy even when the patina built up.

Thinking back, his approach definitely had advantages. But I was married.

Yes that group is really good. We just deleted FB though so May start one on MeWe. Just glad the CF is here. What model did you buy? Spent today re-doing the fuel line from tank to pump with new oil/water separator. Much easier to get to now. Also inspected the impeller of the raw water pump. Talk about retarded location on my engine though....

Yeah I bet back when they were new in the early seventies ummmmmm if the bulkheads could tell stories I can only imagine lol!!!
I am planning on replacing the portlights with custom aluminum frames. Maybe stainless just have to see how much fabrication cost.

I have a '79 Ketch. Mine came with New Metals stainless steal port lights. There was water ingress before I took over the boat and alot of the togs were rusted etc. It's been a nightmare to deal with and I'm going to replace with aluminum. I'm becoming less and less a fan of stainless steal because there are many grades and finding a manufacturer who hasn't cut corners and used a lower grade is getting harder and harder.

Great point on the SS! Yes I may just have alum custom fabricated for the port lights. Would love to redo with opening ones. Hmmm something to consider while in the yard.
