SV Nirvana Now sinks WSW of Galapagos

No work of what caused it but it sounds like some sort of mechanical failure.
Thanks to the notifications/communications and yachts that came to their rescue.

Awesome First-hand Account by Nirvana's Crew!

End events of S/Y NIRVANA NOW | Breaking Free

The link above delivers you to a gripping and well-written first-hand account of how a chain of events led to the loss of a beloved boat, and the dramatic rescue of her two crew at sea by fellow cruisers. If you are cruising, or plan to be, this is a priceless read.

Thanks for posting the update, SVTRIO.
Very sad, but very reassuring to know others were willing to go out of their way to help another cruiser family.
The recent events have been heavy to bear, what with Kitty in Kemah, TX and Nirvana Now. I am sure I missed some.
It is a great bunch of people we may only know vicariously through this site.
Stay safe, but keep on doing.
I plan to get my chance this fall, and it is reassuring there is a conucopia of folks out there keeping everyone's sixes.

So glad it worked out well. Cudos to all involved!

It's interesting to note that even in this day of ubiquitous iPhones and satphones and AIS and all kinds of electronic gadgets, it was a 70-year old technology which saved the bacon: ham radio and marine SSB.

This is just one of the recent disasters at sea in which ham and marine SSB have been instrumental in effecting a rescue.

The lesson is simple: if you are venturing offshore, it's a very good plan to have a working ham and/or marine SSB aboard, as well as crew who are experienced and know how to use it.

The HAMs on the Pacific Seafarers Net did a great job of organizing and staying on top of this.

Too bad a nice boat like this ends up going down after a series of issues.

Good Heavens....I choked up a few times reading that post just from the emotion and real life drama of what I was reading...

Thank goodness it all ended so well and it also goes to show you what your fellow cruisers out there will do for you...literally save you life!

Re: SV Nirvana Now sinks WSW of Galapagos

We buddied up with 3 other boats when leaving the Galapagos and heading for the Marquesas, in part so we could assist each other should the need arose. We all had SSB radios and maintained a daily catch up to swap weather and other info. The plan fell apart really as the slowest boat ended up being around 1200 miles astern when we hit Nuku Hiva. We had an iridium phone linked to the laptop and used that for weather, more so than the SSB weather fax. I think on reflection, for safety buddy up with similar sized boats.

In this case Continum was 190 miles behind Nirvana Now when they made contact via the Pacific Seafarers Net.
