Don't know about blisters but in general Spencer has a reputation as a very solid boat.

When I was a broker years ago I sold a Spencer 51 in Florida. Everything I saw at the time looked very well built.

According to saildata.com the first one was built in 1970 and 31 hulls were made. For a boat of that age the potential for blisters is certainly there, it all depends upon the care the owner gave it.

FWIW my neighbor owned a 1978 Spencer 1330 until recently sold and the hull was clean as far as I know. He was a meticulous and tightfisted second owner. The original owner completed the interior and did a rather good job.

Spencer’s have a good rep. Check the Plastic Classics social group for any owners. I would highly doubt they have blisters but I have not seen any out of the water. The early says of Fiberglass they were built like tanks, which is a good thing in this case imo.

Re: Spencer yachts made in BC Canada

Per Sailboat data website. Details on 13 sailboat designs.

https://sailboatdata.com/builder/spencer-boats-ltd

Spencer Boats Ltd.

1952 -

Spencer Boats. Ltd. of Vancouver, BC, Canada, was formed as a partnership between Phil Hantke and designer John Brandlmayr to build eighteen- foot plywood cruisers and runabouts. In the early 1960’s the product line changed to fiberglass hulled custom and semi-custom sailboats.
Over the years, dozens of different models were produced in sizes ranging from 28 to 53 feet. The company developed a reputation for high quality and offshore capable yachts, particularly with the 35, 44 and 53 foot models.

The exact relationship with the company and the SUN line of sailboats is unknown (to this author - 2008).

In 1997 the company was reorganized under new ownership and the company name was changed to Spencer Yachts Ltd. Seven different models were available from 35 to 46 feet.

Darcy and Malcolm Wilkinson, veteran offshore sailors, became owners of the firm some time around 2006.

What year is the boat?
Have you ever read Hal Roth? 2 or 3 circumnavigations on a 35.

Re: Spencer yachts made in BC Canada

One more thing about Spencers, I have read that they connected the hull to deck while the hull was still in the mold to avoid any issues in hull to deck joint.

Re: Spencer yachts made in BC Canada

I have a 1978 Spencer 1330 (44ft). She has no blisters. I have sailed her down the west coast from Victoria, BC to Manzanilla, MX, from Puerto Vallarta to Hawaii, around Hawaii Islands and back to Victoria BC. She is an excellent offshore cruiser. I have friends that own a 53 Ft Spencer of similar vintage. No blisters and an equally excellent offshore cruiser. You can’t go wrong with a Spencer!

Re: Spencer yachts made in BC Canada

There used to be a Spencer sailboat group. Is there one now? I have a Spencer 51 cutter hull number 2. I think the plug they made hull #1. Later I think they converted the plug into a sailboat named Fern? I wish I knew more history on my boat Coho, she just turned 50 and I would like to have a party for her and have a story to tell about her. (I have owned her for the last 15 years and live aboard her.
