Re: Morgan 33 Out Island Owners?

My understanding is that the Out Island series was designed specifically for the florida charter trade, i.e. sailing to the bahamas.

I love mine and would not hesitate to sail her to the Bahamas, in fact I am planning a trip this coming year.

I also have been looking at a couple 38 and 40 but more cash and needs more updating which reduces my kitty for cruising. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
Thought # 1...

You should buy this one and get all of your practice bringin' her around...

ROTFL. I just found your thread. I assume from your sig you still own her? It is a sweet looking boat.

Almost as sweet as mine.

Alas... Tis true... I've given up on the "pending deal" that I made too many time concessions for... Time to refocus on the sale again...

It's true that the Morgan Out Islands were designed with the charter trade in mind,- specifically the Caribbean and the Bahamas; however, these charter companies did not keep any of their fleet in Florida for passages to the islands. Like today, most of the charters are from three days to a week and the boats remain within an island group. As an example, sailboats chartered in Marsh Harbor. Abaco, are normally restricted to the area from Whale Cay to the north and Little Harbor to the south. Those chartered in the Virgin Islands remain among these islands.

We bought a new Morgan Out Island 33 in 1973 and sailed it from Florida to the Bahamas in 1975. Our best sail on our 33 was that same summer with a 24 hour run from Walkers Cay to Port Canaveral.

We've always had pleasant passages on both of our Morgan Out Islands, but then we only choose the best of conditions. We sometimes work though a short squall or a pop-up thunder shower, but these rarely last as much as an hour and they are easily managed.

Re: Morgan 33 Out Island Owners?

Hi
I am the owner of a 33 Out Island in the Bahamas. I am going to take he to Florida soon and need to replace the nav lights in the bow with LED's. I can remember what kind of bulb they have. Are they bayonet or festoon?

Thanks and if you are willing I'll be back with more questions no doubt.

Re: Morgan 33 Out Island Owners?

Joe, I recently replaced the entire "tear-drop" shaped running light fixtures that contained very bright LEDs and perfectly matched the original Perko lights. I'll need to look at my log to find the manufacturer, price and part number, but I'm writing myself a note and I'll be back on this thread with the information. These were great replacements for me!

Re: Morgan 33 Out Island Owners?

Toddedger's choice may suit you well. My LED bow lights that replaced the original Perko lights (shown in photo) were made by Whitside Lights (UK),- flush mount # S-918 LED, but I can't find them online anymore. The same size replacement in LEDs are also available at the Five Oceans site, "Navigation Lights code: 3840" and selling at $37.14 for the pair.

Re: Morgan 33 Out Island Owners?

Thanks to you all for the help. I am going to the Exumas to free up a locked up Perkins 4.108 and get a boat that has sat for a few years seaworthy. It's a daunting task to try to remember everything it needs.

Re: Morgan 33 Out Island Owners?

Hi , New to me 1978 Morgan O/I owner. On my way from stuart fl to Miami my Perkins quit currently in west palm beach. I think it's a cooling or heat exchanger issue.

Think in ng of putting an outboard on for the remainder of the journey.

Is 15 or 20 hp enough?
Do I need Fremont controls or would I be able to make adjustments to the outboard. Seems like it would have to sit pretty low on the transom to reach the controls.

Any and all comments n suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance!

You need to buy one of those adjustable stern brackets. Not cheap and a PIA to install. A 10-15 hp OB should be fine for a 33 ft boat.
Have you considered getting the Perkins fixed? or is it something big? There's a small diesel, Yanmar parts guy located in a small house/shop in Ft Pierce. He knows good mechanics.
I think it's Florida Marine Diesel

Thanks! I'll look into that also . Figured it may cost too much. But can I have his info?
