Re-rigging a 37ft sailboat in Spain

Hi all,

I've recently bought a 37 foot sailboat in need of new standing rigging in Valencia, Spain. Unfortunately the task is a bit beyond my technical ability so I'll need to find a rigger to do the work. I've received one quote for €5,500 which almost caused me to fall off my chair. Does anyone have any recommendations of riggers close-by who could do the work for a more reasonable sum, or other alternatives you think I should consider?

Your advice is much appreciated!

You may need to include a bit more data, like the model of boat.

What kind of hardware and wire do you require, or did the rigger propose? Where are you starting from? Is there any rigging in place already, and can any of it be re-used?

The details on this will matter for cost.

Sorry for the limited data.
Its a 2003 Beneteau 373. The standing rigging is original and shows signs of rust.

Here is what the rigger proposed and associated prices:
- 2 Backstays Ø 6mm con terminales y tensores…… 510
- 2 D1 Ø 7mm con terminales y tensores…… 555
- 2 D2 Ø 6mm con terminales y tensores…… 400
- 2 V1 Ø 8mm con terminales y tensores…… 640
- 2 V2D3 Ø 7mm con terminales…… 470
- 1 Babystay Ø 5mm con terminales y tensor…… 190
- 1 Stay Ø 7mm con terminales…… 240
Grúa para desmontar y montar el palo…… 580
Mano de obra y pequeño material…… 2.400
-------
TOTAL…… 5.485 €

Looking forward to hearing what you think!

Re: Re-rigging a 37ft sailboat in Spain

Little other than rudimentary good sense is needed to re-rig a boat with mechanical terminals like StaLok. https://www.stalok.com/images/pdf/Im...e-Brochure.pdf If you have the old rigging, cut the wire to the right length using a hacksaw, wire cutter, or grinder with cut off wheel, intsall the terminals according to the directions and reinstall the wire. If the mast is on the deck, install the wire, drop the stick in place and install wire turnbuckles. You can tension the wire using a Loos gage or get someone with a little experience to help you set up the wire tension. If the stick is in place you'll need a way to get up the mast to replace the wires. I've used a Mast Climber https://www.atninc.com/atn-mastclimb...quipment.shtml and mountain climbing gear If you are serious about your rigging would get either of these systems just so you can maintain the rigging.

Re: Re-rigging a 37ft sailboat in Spain

He’s including a charge of 580 euros for a crane to pull and replace the mast. That means he’s planning to do this on the flat, which saves him a LOT of man-hours. it would take three 8-hour days at 100 euros/hour to come to the 2400 euros he’s indicated for labor & miscellaneous. With the mast down and materials on hand should it take more than one 8-hour day? Sounds like you need some more quotes.

Re: Re-rigging a 37ft sailboat in Spain

Get the materials as priced.
Re-rig yourself - changing one piece at a time.

Easy.

The work quote is an outrageous rip-off.

EUR 2400 is what an average Spanish worker makes over two months. So this is as if one person needed two months to re-rig a boat.

Somehow, I can do just that in less than a week. Perhaps because I am not Spanish yet.

Get the parts. Re-rig yourself. Save 1500 EUR or upwards. Or swallow your pride and pay what any other inexperienced Med sailor would.

Cheers,
b.

5-6-7 mm wires??? On a 37 foot boat?

You should reconsider going up sizes if you planning to sail that boat.

Try searching for yacht riggers in Palma de Mallorca. It is not far from you. You might be able to get c couple of quotes. I did a search and came up with 2.

For any job of that magnitude, it's worth getting multiple quotes.

Re: Re-rigging a 37ft sailboat in Spain

The former owner of my Shannon 28 cutter had a complete standing/running rigging replacement done in Girona about 3 years ago before selling the boat to me. Changed all wire ( 7mm), all toggles and turn buckles, replaced the VHF mast cable, and installed new Facnor furlers on both stays. Labour was 28 hrs/48hr for a total of about Euro 1,350. Total cost of the job, including crane services ( Euro 300), and new furlers ( about Euro 2500) was about 9K.

You don't say who gave you the quote, but a few months ago, met a local rigger on my dock in Valencia from ProRiggers.. Have never had any work done by them, but you might give them a call to see what kind of quote they can provide once the lockdown here is over near the end of April. Hopefully.

Not particularly impressed with the yacht services in Valencia. Had commissioned a local sailmaker to recut a jib and put a third reef in the main for me last September and, although the quote seemed reasonable, he sat on them for 4 months until finally, in January, I requested he bring the sails back with neither job done. As another poster recommended, you might get better results in Palma or perhaps Barcelona.

Good luck,

Greg

Definitely he will get a better result in Palma as it is a major yachting centre. There are more yachts on the island than anywhere else in the world that I know of. Palma itself has literally thousands.

If you want to save some money search YouTube for Sailing Zingaro” and other videos on Dyneema, a synthetic line fairly easy to work with with a little practice. It is stronger than steel of the same size.

Re: Re-rigging a 37ft sailboat in Spain

I just re-rigged our 32 foot yacht in Queensland and the cost was $1800 Euro's for all the 8mm stays and rigging screws. Then there was 4 hours up the mast and two people on the deck to winch me and remove the stays while I put the new stays on. Then you have to allow another hour or so for measuring the stays before they were made. So you could easily say a days work all up for two people.
Cheers

Get quotes from Portugal or nearby Portugal, La Linea. Spain often sub contracts people from Portugal for work in Spain. Dyneema is a good alternative but DIY is best .

My Prout 35 was rerigged by Chris at Almerimar Marine in Almerimar. It has two backstays, two shrouds, forestay, baby stay and two lowers. All 8mm rigging. Total cost including the mast coming off and back on was around €3500.
