She was hard aground East of Smack Bayou. I was told someone could see her from the City Marina but was not able to tell that it was a sailboat. -Sam

Re: Stolen Beneteau

I felt sad to learn the boat had been trashed, but even crew that are acquaintances can leave a horrible mess behind.

We have a friend who competed in the 94-95 BOC. He allowed some mates to deliver it back to Sydney following a promotion event.` That delivery crew of supposed friends trashed the race boat. They tore the mainsail (failure to reef); they left the boat littered with fast food stuff and, worse, beer cans and bottles (the skipper was tee total, and the boat was filthy--from a day sail. Shame. Who the F did they think was going to clean up after them, Mommy? Jeez!

Anyhow, trashed doesn't surprise me. Glad the skipper got her back, and hopefully, the grounding wasn't too hard, and she is not badly damaged.

But trashers, they deserve to have to clean after others till the end of time! And that, me lads, is a curse!

Ann

PIRATES IN FLORIDA !!!!

If this had happened in another part of the world where "piracy" is "common," the whole sailing community would've been up in arms about PIRATES.

Am I wrong?

Are you wrong? IMO, yes.

Even we emotional, irrational yotties can tell the difference between simple theft where there is no personal interaction or threat and the sort of thing those real world pirates do... holding ships and crews for ransome, beheading kidnap victims, making yachtsmen walk the plank ( OK, that's an exaggeration!).

I do not condone boat theft such as this case, but I don't equate it with Somalia or southern Philippines.

Ann, I couldn't agree more with your thinking, very well stated!

I've never heard this story. Sad, ignorant, arrogance or misguided adventure seekers that felt bullet proof. Bad way to go. If I were the owner, I don't know but I'd think I might have mixed feelings about getting the boat back. -Sam

Well the thieves certainly went for the big catch, 82' Yacht. Ale and Pizza aboard didn't help their "seamanship" if they had any. Glad they got busted. Hopefully the boat didn't receive too much damage.

Re: Stolen Beneteau

Was it actually damaged, or just filthy? Have they caught the thief? They made it what, maybe 5 miles? Bottom there is soft sand / mud, I hope it wasn't damaged.
I am re-thinking a hidden disable switch, real easy to do.
Easy to defeat though too if you have any mechanical abilities

But also potentially harder for a fellow sailor to save your boat in the event you're dragging at anchor.

I don't worry about this as much in the US, and I guess I'm just very cynical, but I'm always amazed people leave their boats anchored in a populated area, leave them unattended for a day to a few months, and still find them untouched and in the same place!

Sad is when a kid dies of cancer or someone is hit by a car. This story is the product of greed and stupidity. No sympathy.
"the couple may have starved to death as the bodies were severely emaciated and there were no provisions or fresh water on board." C'mon.

Re: Stolen Beneteau

Filthy and damaged. To what extent the damages were I do not yet know. The Owner had to feel sick. Saturday morning was spent with a Detective watching some of his stuff leave the boat in bags as evidence. I know the boat was listing to Starboard and shoreline was left off. The thief or thieves had to break in to the companionway hatch because it stays locked. I will try to find out more this weekend.

As of last week they did have a strong lead, a vehicle and possible suspect with warrants on him.

Re: Stolen Beneteau

If it was broken into, that is even more strange. I had assumed some moron was walking by and saw the keys hanging into the ignition.
Stealing a sailboat is odd, I have to think someone had it out for him? Hopefully the cops are going to find the person.
Near Smack Bayou is outside of swimming distance from land too, how did the thief get ashore?
