James Wharram - A Giant Has Fallen

James Wharram - A Giant Has Fallen

A Living Legend Lives No More
https://www.wharram.com/news/2021/a-...-lives-no-more

"We are very sad to announce that on the 14th December James Wharram left this earthly world, joining Ruth, Jutta and his many close friends that departed before him. At 93 years old his spirit has set out on the voyage to sail the oceans of heaven...."

No need to rest James, instead you should continue to sail across all of God's great oceans in the sky.

Fare well sailor, I wish you fair winds and following seas for all eternity.

Fallen but won't be forgotten; Wharrams will be sailing oceans for a long time to come. R.I.P. James.

James Wharram Passes Away Dec 14

One of the multihull greats, the pioneer who really put catamarans on the map, James was an innovator far ahead of his time. His designs remained anchored in the past with flexible beam connections, and open decks, anachronistic boats that still appealed to many people, and had a blue water reputation and reputation for structural integrity second to none. They left a lot to be desired for most of us, but they stayed together and right side up in the worst of conditions including tropical cyclones. Probably more Wharram boats have been home built and any other catamaran. Richard Woods began his career working under James Wharram before he went his own way and developed some of the best owner built designs out there. (IMHO).
A great man who contributed a lot to modern multihull design. Building his first catamaran in 1954, he continued to design cats until his death in 2021! I may not agree with some of his design choices, but who can argue with success?

This guy was AWESOME. It’s a sad day to see him go. While I didn’t go for a Wharram design, it sure was tempting for the simplicity.

Lashings make so much sense too.

He contributed a lot and Richard Woods has contributed just as much. Woods designs are some of the best out there too.

Always was curious about that man and his boats, sailed on a couple briefly. Am sorry to hear of his passing, alzheimers is a nasty disease.

Even in his passing he took the unconventional route. Good on ya, James. You contributed to the lives of many.

Most admirable how starting from simplest possible designs. enabling many to ingress in a seafarers life on low budget, creating a worldwide comunity, and developing the designs into excellent performing sailing catamarans, without abandoning the basic simplicity.

his simple building techniques (& the right "marketing") - made it possible for a 20 year old lad, who had never before sailed on saltwater, to build his boat & make his dream of sailing rtw true -
thank you Jim!

Re: James Wharram Passes Away Dec 14

Great Wharram memories will indeed flow out for the next while.
Bought this Narai MK 4 with my best friend at about 21 years old, Sadly at 62 my memory also fails to remember everything. The pix are from last spring during 5 days of sailing around Nanaimo and a overnight stop in at smugglers cove.
Fair winds James,
