MD7A Mechanic (Austin Texas area)

Hi all,

I've run into several dead ends trying to find a mechanic to work on a Volvo MD7A on Lake Travis in the Austin Texas area.

What can I do? I have a friend who knows my skill set (somewhat) and said these engines are stupid easy to work on. However, I'm still determined to search for a mechanic. We've had people tell us the following:

a) I don't make service calls
b) I wont work on that engine / I don't know how to work on that engine

It's very daunting. We have what I believe to be a fuel injector leak and I'm just wading through how to even attack this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

My stepson is a diesel mechanic in the Austin area, heavy equipment, but he might do it for something different or refer you to someome. Want me to ask?

I would absolutely appreciate it. We aren't looking for free advice and would happily pay someone. Please let me know! We just honestly need to fix a minor fuel issue and would appreciate any advice or references.

Post a photo or two and some details, you may get the help you need right here. If I was close by I would help in person but alas I'm in MN. There is nothing frightening about engines.

Have you checked with Sail and Ski marina? They have a mechanic working by appointment Monday through Friday.

It may be of help if you can get a copy of the service manual. There are copies online available for free.

Jerry,

Sail and ski said they won't work on it. I'm going to call again on Monday.

What makes you think you have an injector leak?

There a couple of guys here who have done extensive work on that engine who know it very well.

It's spraying high pressure diesel from behind the pump at the junction as indicated in the picture above. Note that the blue line is approximately where the gas is coming from. It's a few mm's past where it actually is coming from.

Huuum. As a first alternate I'd look to finding a local pump rebuild shop. Find out if they will rebuild the pump for you. Then ask them if they know a mechanic to take it off and reinstall. You do have to be careful to get the alignment correct when replacing or the timing will be off.

Re: MD7A Mechanic (Austin Texas area)

Yeah. That's what's stopping me is the timing. I understand I have to take the water pump off first, then the gear behind it, scribe the pump location, mark the gear and take it to the shop. I'm just hesitant to get into a job like this -- not be able to complete it, then be out of luck. We have a diesel shop here that will do the rebuild. My best guess is to ask my neighbor who runs a car repair shop to let me borrow one of his guys.

Re: MD7A Mechanic (Austin Texas area)

Looks like the Inj.Pump Bosch VE-Disributor Style is leaking Housing Pressure between the Head and Pump Housing.Did you check the 4 slotted
Screws which are pressing the head to the housing for proper torque ?
If they are tight than the pump has to be taken out and repaired (change all the O-rings and Gaskets .
Good luck
Cheers
Siggi

Re: MD7A Mechanic (Austin Texas area)

The 4 screws are very tight! I did check that. Next move is to find someone to pull it and take it to the shop!
