Jeanneau, cross the Atlantic?

I’m in the market for a monohull and my budget ($300k USD) is leading me towards purchasing a newer production style boat such as a 2012 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 53 ds. I’m curious if anyone on the forum has this boat or experience on it that would recommend passages across the Atlantic or Pacific oceans. While I would spend most of my time sailing the Caribbean and Atlantic coast of South America I am curious if this boat is capable of performing long passages safely. Another option might be a 2008 Grand Soleil 54.

Possible passages include the following:

South Pacific
Panama to Vanuatu
Vanuatu to Malaysia

Indian Ocean
Malaysia to Madagascar

Atlantic Ocean
Madagascar to S.A.
S.A. to Brazil

Re: Jeanneau, cross the Atlantic?

We have a 2001-launched 2003 - Jeanneau DS40 that we sailed all over the Caribbean - both sides, did a 2 handed crossing of the Atlantic - a couple of years in the Med and last year all the way around the Black Sea -
She is a great boat and well constructed
We know of one Jeanneau that just sailed from the Med to Aussie land

go to this site and ask current owners what they think

Re: Jeanneau, cross the Atlantic?

It really gets down to the sailor as almost anything will cross an ocean. Overall quality is probably higher on a GS but find the boat that you like the most. R

Of course it is. It's a 54 foot modern boat!

The name says it all.. he's got a risky catamaran..
But seriously either of those mono's are capable of the trip with the normal provisions..

Re: Jeanneau, cross the Atlantic?

We left Denmark last May and are now in the caribbean - we've sailed in our Sun Fast 40.3 acros the North sea, Biscay Bay and the Atlantic. No issues regarding seaworthiness of the boat whatsoever.

Either boat will do what you want without issue

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Re: Jeanneau, cross the Atlantic?

The Atlantic has been crossed with a paddleboard! Id buy a slightly older bluewater criuser than Jeanneau/Benneteau etc but just my preference.

The big Jeanneau's are well built.
Having said that... it is a flat bottom, fin keel, spade rudder design.
Check your keel bolts, inspect your rudder regularly.
And don't hit anything :/

Note: chackout La Vagabonde on youtube. They have been around the world on a Benneteau Oceanis 43. Just don't hit anything...

Not a 43 but a Beneteau 393 39 feet. 11.62m.

Don't hit anything with any boat.

Re: Jeanneau, cross the Atlantic?

A few years ago I solo crewed this boat with the owner from Vanuatu to Honolulu in 22 days. Excellent boat!

2007*Jeanneau SO 49 Performance

"...recently returned from a South Pacific circumnavigation, and is ready to go again. Lots of custom touches throughout the boat, and the finest in electronics and navigational equipment, make this boat very comfortable cruiser. Cutter-rigged with two Facnor roller furlers, a third head- stay for storm sails, single line slab reefing, and a full batten main make sail handling a breeze. Custom dodger and bimini keep the crew dry and out of the sun when sailing, and a full suit of North and Quantum sails..."

Halfway around. And damaged the keel connection touching the bottom when anchored in the Carib.

Didn't they also have to repair the rudder assembly with steel plates? Somewhere around Gibralter if I recall correctly. Or was it another boat?
