Lagoon 450S Roller Furling Spool Slipping and Jamming

Hi All,

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I have a fairly new 450S and have had trouble with the roller spooling drum on the jib as the furling line is rolling onto the lower part of the drum, then over filling it, slipping off the bottom and tangling into the drum’s pivot point.

The issue seems to be that the angle of the line from the spool to the first pulley on the starboard side is angled down so when the line spools on the furler its all rolling into the bottom of the spool, slipping off the bottom, and catching/jamming into the lower mechanism.

I’ve tried the following:

1. Keeping tension applied like the manual says.
2. I’ve pulled it manually at the same angle from sitting on the trampoline… and it still happens.
3. I’ve pulled it in manually from a standing position while standing forward on the trampoline and it works fine. Thus, my assumption is the angle down is what’s causing the problem.

Has anyone had this problem, have you solved it?

First time ever on a boat where the drum is allowing a line to slip into the lower mechanism…

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Vinny

Is there a link plate between the furling drum and stem fitting.? It might be too long.

Hi S17!

Thanks, nothing more than is needed.

Here are some pictures, they should show the connection and the down angle on the line. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Vinny

I think the line guide is facing the wrong way. It needs to rotate 180.

That could be, they look identical but worth a shot!

Actually not identical. The side facing forward in the photos is designed to enclose the lead into the drum. It should face aft and the furling line passed through it.

Excellent, I so very much appreciate the feedback! I'll give this a shot in light wind dockside and gather based on the feedback that it will work .

Much apprecaited!

Attach a block to the seagull striker.

Hope that Delta Fastset is a backup anchor...

Need a Rocna or Mantus

Jeff and Bean, thanks!

I like the idea of a block, and yes the Delta is a backup, have a sufficient Rocna properly installed. 78lbs i believe... thanks!

Clearly a fair lead for the line is important.
But I also have to ask are the drum and the cage installed properly? Is there a way to move the cage closer to the drum?
Could you build a spacer to fill up the gap between the cage and the drum?
Even something as simple as a block of plastic or wood jammed in between the arms of the cage and up close to the drum could prevent the line from slipping under the drum.

Good thoughts, the system is not adjustable unfortunately. I'll test the block system, and confirm the line direction, then continue to tweak as you suggest if needed.

Thanks!

This has been very helpful. My own 450S suffers from the same problem. Thanks guys. Suggestions make a lot of sense

We had this same problem with our furling drum and the two options are block (or low friction ring) as shown in a few posts above, or a smaller diameter furling line.

In our case we added an LFR instead of a block as there is hardly any deflection and no need for a turning sheave.
