Rerigging Pearson 365 with a boom vang

I am upgrading rigging on our ‘82 Pearson 365 and want to add a boom vang. Anyone done this on their Pearson?

Are you planning to add a rigid vang or a block and tackle vang? Block and tackle vang should be pretty simple to add...

Re: Rerigging Pearson 365 with a boom vang

I used a double bock and tackle on my Pearson 35. Used 4 part tackle on each side from boom to deck fitting and bitter end back to the cockpit. Works great and solidly locks the boom in position when at anchor which is a big safety plus. They also act as preventers when the boom is let way out. You do have to remember to release them tacking but make it really easy to ease the boom through a jibe.

Didn't want to give up the deck stowage area aft of the mast that a rigid or boom to mast base tackle vang wipes out.

I have been leaning toward block and tackle and appreciate the insight on the 4-by on the mast.. Thanks

Re: Rerigging Pearson 365 with a boom vang

Adding a boom vang does seem like a simple and easy modification, but the loads on the boom are very large. A great deal depends on the angles and loads, vangs from mast base to boom need to be carefully engineered.

I have seen several boats break booms at vang attachments, and some of these were with factory designed systems. It is not a change to be taken lightly.

Far better is the system roverhi suggests with attachments as far out the boom as possible and down the the rail instead of back to the mast. Arguably less convenient, but more functional and a lot safer. It can be done with a strap around the boom, so no hardware to add.

Don't have one on ours , and really can't say we've missed it . A lot of the time you're sailing jigger and jib to get the most comfortable ride, I'm assuming it's a ketch ? If it's the sloop version , then that's a different animal all together !
