The biggest downside for me is that the water is routinely murky with lots of suspended sediment. You'll only get clear water if the wind stops blowing for 2-3 days, which is kinda rare on the Texas coast.

Ive screwed many a race start while admiring my rudders in the lakes ( because I normally couldn’t see them on the coast).

If Florida is over-crowded, not quite sure about a recommendation to go to a place with greater population.

Maybe because crowding is a measure of density and that density only really matters in coastal areas for cruisers.

The population of Texas is about 1/3 larger than Florida but the land area is 5 times larger.

Probably more importantly, if you compare population density, Florida is heavily concentrated in coastal areas with the exception of Orlando. The major population centers in Texas are largely inland 100-200miles from the coast (Dallas, San Antonio, Austin).

Large stretches of the Texas coast are comparatively lightly populated.

PS: For those saying the Texas coast is flat and boring...have you ever been to Florida? It's not like they have mountains coming right up to the coast.

.
Forgot Houston. Major population, closer to the coast than those listed. Why you have huge number of boats in Clear Lake/Seabrook/Kemah area.

True...you have one small section of the Texas coast that is heavily built up around Houston/Galveston. Maybe 50 miles. South Padre has about 10-15 miles somewhat built up but not near as bad as much of Florida.

In Florida, you have pretty much everything from Miami to the Georgia border heavily concentrated on the coast. All the Keys, plus Naples to Tarpon Springs are heavily built up on the coast. Plus Pensacola to Panama City.

Google population density map by state...it's obvious that Florida is far more concentrated on the coasts.

Re: Is Texas a good place to cruise/liveaboard?

Top 5 over my last 5 years living aboard in Texas from Sabine lake to Port Aransas.

5. Private slip on the Neches River - complete freedom
4. Sabine Pass port authority. - offshore access excellent fishing remote
3. Offatts bayou. - free to anchor, access to galveston/city, all year anchorage - plenty of Marinas for services at all crew classes
2. Kemah. Plenty of above ground welcoming liveaboard communities, access to everything sailing repair from sail lofts to resale shops.
1. Rockport. Absolutely no hassle entry for true transient liveaboards. 3 months of cute coastal community then cruise for a while - tons of seasonal jobs, unbelievable community access, beautiful water and beaches, live and let live friendly culture.

The quality of coastal life improves dramatically from east to west.

Top 5 no-no's of living aboard
1. Disrespecting the system - it's a delicate balance,
2. Abandoning your dream - go sailing when you don't feel like it. Everything else will align
3. Feeling bad about it - some people need someone to look down on, it's part of their inner infrastructure
4. Neglect your neighbors - sailing regularly is a lofty goal. It takes friends, help out around the place
5. Telling people you're a liveaboard - Stay Transient my friends, policies change, people are crazy, you own nothing, it's the dream anyway.
