Re: OpenCPN on my MacBook

Are you familiar with the export function in the route manager? Exported routes, tracks, and waypoints are written to a .gpx file. It's a plain text file with HTML-like markers so you can edit it with most any text editor. See if you can make that work for you.

Thumbs up Re: OpenCPN on my MacBook

Thanks fgd3 - I have tried that and there is a lot of 'script' included which is extremely tedious to edit out. I guess what I should do is provide feedback to OpenCPN that an export to excel or word would be very helpful for captains doing planning around a trip long before they actually head out of the dock. Thanks for the response and keep them coming.

Re: OpenCPN on my MacBook

1. How do you make it work wirelessly with an iPad? (I believe Luna will do it but some users cant make it reliably work wirelessly https://apps.apple.com/us/app/luna-display/id1250259715)

2. If the solution in 1.) above works, does one still need a chart plotter at the helm?

As has been pointed out here, you could export as .gpx

You could also use the JavaScript plugin to export in any format you wish, such as .csv. For example, I have a script for my own use that exports tracks in a custom flavour of .kml for displaying on my website. This approach is definitely preferable to putting such requirements into OpenCPN.

Better still, you can surely do what you want entirely within a script for the JavaScript plugin. The script has access to routes and can get the vector (bearing and distance) between route points. So you could play with your route and do your own calculations for various speed scenarios without the hassle of exporting data.

This is way off topic from OpenCPN on my MacBook, so if you want further pointers, I suggest you PM me.

Have a look at this thread on using OpenCPN as the main navigational system and shadowing it using an iPad at the wheel station.
