My old 2-29. No frame, oversized windows trough bolted. No leaks, even after surviving hurricane Irma in Miami

Re: Replacement Window frames For cal-29

I’m following this thread because I’d like to know where others get new frames. I will need new ones too sometime. I wonder if anyone has a lead on not-too-expensive custom frames.

Re: Replacement Window frames For cal-29

I bought a set from Mark Heacox for our (now sold) Cal 2-27. I got tempered smoked glass. They were perfect. I sent Mark paper templates so that he could match everything up (he already has the tooling). I highly recommend him.

Ita,

Are you going to do the Miami to Key Largo race in April?

You might try consulting Motion Windows, right across the river in Vancouver, WA.

I second Mark plastics. He supplied all 9 windows for my Cal246. 1973 model. He had patterns from the original windows. I love my new leak proof windows

Re: Replacement Window frames For cal-29

My 1977 Cal 2-29 does not have port frames. It came with 1/4" acrylic through bolted to the interior. I have replaced them twice due to sun fogging. The first time I used Lexan which fogged quickly. The second time I used 1/4" grey acrylic which has lasted for many years. I have had poor luck, leaks, using any kind of caulk with acryilic. For the Cal I used 1" wide strips of black raw rubber I got from a tire recapping place. It was very sticky and made a leak free compression gasket with SS bolts about every 2" around the periphery. The black does not stand out with the grey acryilic. I drilled toversized bolt holes in the acrylic to allow for expansion. You can work the acrylic like wood. I cut it with a saber saw and rounded the edges with a router. I coated the bolts in clear silicon rubber to make them go through the raw rubber without grabbing. Tire recappers may not use raw rubber sheets any more and you will have to hunt for raw rubber. $300 should be all you need to do two Cal 29s this way.

Mark plastics951. -735-7705 corona calif . These folks have the original templates for all cal boats . However their cost is out of my budget. 275$ to 300 bucks per porthole. They are made out of vinyl plastic .and are white .the windows can be vinyl acrylic or tempered glass your choice .I would recommend going through some sort of chandlery ,where they have recovered all the port holesFrames from scrapped Cal-29’s. Best of luck. PS I’m just cleaning mine up and reusing them with Sudberry elastometric

Re: Replacement Window frames For cal-29

There's a product/style name for those extruded Alum window frames, but it evades me right now. They do them custom but not sure how much just a couple would be. They were still making them about 10 years ago.
