Will LFP battery prices come down?

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3092890/battery-billionaire-who-holds-key-teslas-future-china-and-elon

Chinese battery company to make LFP batteries for Teslas sold in China. Mass market for EVís should improve LFP prices for cruisers due to scale - I hope.

Re: Will LFP battery prices come down?

I sure hope so, I can't afford $1k per good battery that isn't gonna blow up. :-)

Re: Will LFP battery prices come down?

Obviously you get what you pay for but AliExpress recently had 32pcs of 200AH cells for $3500 DELIVERED TAX PAID. They are currently ~$4200.

That's the equivalent of 1600AH@12v.

They are already cost equivalent to AGM's on a usable amp hr basis.

Re: Will LFP battery prices come down?

Management of Lifepo4 is the hard part with cell balancing. If you can wire a bms, you can find some good deals but does come with substantial learning curve. When you pay someone $1000 for a battery, you are paying them to do all the bms work for you.

Now add solar and things can get pretty complicated. I am installing 6 solar panels using 3 solar mppt controllers at 24 volts going to 7kw of Lifepo4 or 290 amphr. 24 volt invertor, 30 amp 24 volt charger, shunts, breakers, 4/0 wire, cell meters, 2 bms, power cutoffs, solar wire, solar connectors, plus 20 other different items. You name it, I have it. But all for about $2700. You must learn how to solder and heat shrink as well as crimp large fittings on huge wire.
BTW, I purchased my 7kwatt batteries for less than $900. Each battery is 3.5kw at 24 volts.

Re: Will LFP battery prices come down?

Yes, CATL's 30+ GW production capacity is being redirected towards LFP so as to dispense with the expense of cobalt and the inherent unreliable sourcing thereof.

Robin's cost of the EV battery packs should be below $80 kWh and below $60 kWh for cells. Yet, the rate of decline in the absolute cost is slowing; it being ever more difficult to implement incremental production efficiencies, but there are still advantages when taken to his incredible volumes. They have achieved costs that avail EVs to be at parity or below ICE vehicles. That is a major tipping point.

May I ask why you went to the expense and complexity of 3 charge controlllers?

Redundancy? Different sized/voltage panels?

Thanks

Two different battery banks. one goes to house bank and 2 go to the big inverter 24 volt bank. Plus the layout of two different types of panels. In the grand total, it isn't that much for a third controller. 2 panels in series times 3 gives 6 panels. Plus expansion in future will dictate 3 controllers.

What do you mean with “will”, they are tumbling down as you read this. Why anyone would buy new old technology is beyond me.

Re: Will LFP battery prices come down?

Perhaps Graphene batteries will bring the price down?

yep untill you start looking at lifetime ah capability then the Lfp wins hands down .

I have a 250ah bank 1p4s complete with a custom 200amp.bms with balancing and a smartgage with 350 amp shunt DIY built for just under 650 installed on the Stephfen Ulysses. They will likely outlive me . ( at least 30 years ) with my usage pattern .
There is no other technology that I would let on a boat that can do that .
