For the purpose of
buying plane tickets for the crew, I was asked to predict the arrival date for an
atlantic crossing. The
skipper said the same thing to me...don't I need to know
hull speed,
wind strength, cruising speed, fuel capacity, precise
route, etc? Nope. 1000 miles per week. With a doctorate in maths, he could not accept that "rule of thumb". To his chagrin, it turned out to be exactly correct, and all crew made their flights home with time to spare.
Sailboats are not linear.
