I would think boater density has something to do with it. And maybe cultural practices. America tends to be far more litigious than Canada.

But in general I find the whole insurance business to be an intentional black box for consumers. Rationale and rates seem to be all over the map, and there are few clear answers as to why something is the way it is, or why it can change so quickly.

Mainly I think marine insurance rates are best explained by the adage: what the market will bear.

Yes - I would agree with most of what you said. There are boats everywhere here. Plenty of idiots on the water too. And of course, we have our share of storms here... We are kind of looking at buying our own waterfront property with dock as a cost mitigation factor. It's expensive but occasionally a decent deal hits the market.

Mike and Nola,

Yeah, it IS a black box.

Here's an insurance story I just can't believe: I went to a boatyard in St Petersburg to plan for a short-haul for an insurance survey, and they said I had to have insurance BEFORE they would haul, even a 1-hour short-haul. So I have to have insurance before I can get insurance!

Insurance is by far the worst aspect of boating.

Fair winds,
Jack

I have had Progressive insurance for the last 12 years. Have had 2 claims and they were handled well. Only complaint is big jump in rate this year. Now at just under $1000 for full coverage for 33 footer with $30k agreed value.

I'm another Geico victim, and trying to get new liability-only insurance in Florida. The results so far: one quotation, which requires haulouts for any windstorm, defined as "Tropical Depressions, Tropical Storms, and Hurricanes".

Haulout for every depression? Never heard of that one before.

Wish me luck,
Jack

It is unclear to me whether this means that I will still be able to get insurance from Geico directly through BoatUS. Gowrie also supposedly is working on securing an alternative (I've purchased through them the past four years, starting with a Lloyds policy, then Geico when Lloyds dropped coverage in the States). My renewal date is January 2022, so I'll be interested to hear what you find. I know this probably isn't helpful to you (sorry), but by way of saying please post an update when you find a solution/make a decision. Thanks

Similar situation, I just yesterday received an email directly from GEICO asking me to request a quote directly from them (seems somewhat promising). I need to figure it out before October I suppose.

Re: Liability-only insurance for a 1979 Morgan 461 sailboat...

So I have a 1980 Hunter 37C and live/cruise in South Florida. Trying to get liability insurance has been a headache.
Geico won’t do anything because of age and where I live and cruise.
Progressive won’t do anything for a boat over 32’ anymore. Cant even fill out a quote form online or over the phone.
Allstate won’t do anything because of where I live
Gowrie won’t do anything because of age of boat and where I live
State Farm said no due to age and where I live.
Every insurance agent I’ve called says no we don’t have anyone who will have a policy for me.
...
It has been really frustrating especially since every marina basically now requires a large liability waiver.

Re: Liability-only insurance for a 1979 Morgan 461 sailboat...

We got liability only on our 74 Cheoy Lee 40’ midshipman 5 years ago for around $30 a year through Boat US, no survey required. We’d been Boat US members for 25 years or so, which may or may not have made a difference. The insurance is actually through Geico.

The boat was destroyed in Harvey 4 years ago.

Florida boats looking for liability should be able to get coverage from highseaslowrates.com

When I decided to switch from full coverage to liability only. I called USAA. They transferred me to Progressive-which I think they own. Progressive quoted approx $225 for 500k coverage-no survey. Renewed just this month.

We've just started looking, and are finding issues with obtaining the insurance that our (and many other, but so far it's not stymied us in our travels, but is now an issue at Vero Beach City Marina) current mooring demands.

We have been self-insured for over 14 years, and don't have any interest in property/gear/whatever-loss insurance. Just liability to cover us if our boat somehow is responsible for damage to anything else.

We've lived aboard for that entire time, and we're learning that we really need to represent ourselves as users, not live-aboarders, and we'll sort out a "home" mailing address in FL, but:

Who's had the same problem, and how/with-whom did you solve it?

Thanks!

Progressive excludes liveaboard use.

Often Liability only is more expensive then fully Comp
As the insurance companies see you as irresponsible, so more likely to cause a claim. Even if the opposite is true
