Multiple boats?

Just curious - some members list an array of boats in their signature info. Does that mean that they actually own three sailboats (or more) or is it a list of boats they have owned over time, the last one being the latest/current?

Not that I’m jealous or anything. One boat keeps me poor enough - why would I want more than one?

Sometimes you owns two boats when you find a great deal on a new one. Sometimes the hobby gets away from your control. Once I had a 40 ft monohull, a 33 fr catamaran, and could not part from my 18 ft trimaran, and at home had a 16 ft inflatable catamaran.

I am a co-owner of a fun little lake sailor here in Austin - we share all expenses maintaining the Venture 25. I have my forever boat - the Tayana 37 in Kemah Texas - 3 1/2 hours away from me. That's a labor of love and a rehab project. May of next year we sell our 50% of the Venture (and everything else we own) and move onto the Tayana and sail it to Maryland for Hurricane season.

That Venture affords me opportunities to be casting off lines 30 minutes after leaving my house. It was also bought 5 years ago for exactly this reason - get time in sailing, not repairing a Perkins 4108 or varnishing teak.

My wife bought a boat ( not yet restored) from a man who had 37. His 22 and 15 from his dad who had just passed.
If I count kayaks we are up to
Town Class (1965 Glass version of a 1930s design)
2 kayaks
North Haven dinghy (old school gaff rigger)
17 foot aquasport to be sold in the spring
8 foot beater deflatable
Dyer midget
PT-11 dinghy
and the big boat.
Ugh. But the midget and kayaks and PT-11 are all in service to the big boat.
And the Townie and the North Haven Dinghy are sweet old school cool.
And that de-inflatable has got to go.

And we have sold (over the years) a Blue Jay, Sabre 38, Inflatables and a Redwing 30. And windsurfers. And a couple of 420s and an optimist. And a sunfish. And given away three kayaks.

Boats flow through life, like water flows through a wet leaky stone walled dirt floored basement. They bring amusement, dampness, irritation and joy.

44'er is our winter home in Caribbean, pre-covid anyway
33'er was our summer cruising boat for Newfoundland, pre-covid anyway.
Now we will live on our 44 in the winter in North Carolina, awaiting permission to go to Canada next summer. Covid willing.

We have two. Catalina 27 normally at a marina but now in backyard for repairs after a tornado. Catalina 22 on trailer to explore other places. Thx-Ace

Dam, I guess I forgot all the other small boats that we owed at one time: 2 Olympic sunfish, one 470, one Laser, one pacific proa, one Philippine paraw, two home build sailing Dinghy’s (Nestor and a self design),a 26? Bluewater late 60’s, a Catapult 16, a trimaran, a Charlie Morgan 32, a Lancer 28, a CAL39, and an EdelCat 33

When I referred to multiple boats, I was referring to large boats, not “anything that floats”.

As soon as we bought our Catalina 30 this summer, my wife found me looking at boats online again. When she asked why, I pointed out I had been shopping online for about three years before we actually bought something, and I figured that three years from now would be when we might be ready for something bigger...

(Of course, I did buy an 8’ Sabot to use as a dinghy a week after the Catalina. I pointed out that using a linear extrapolation, I was on track for 52 boats within a year. Finally got to try the Sabot out last week, and the consensus was it may be fun, but it’s too small for a dinghy. I’m still trying to figure out whether that constitutes approval to buy another boat.)

We intended to be "commuter" sailors.

One boat (the B 11.50) was in Mexico for 9 years after sailing there from Vancouver, but we only lived on it for a month or three at a time for family and climate reasons.

We really missed sailing in BC (Canada). So we bought a slightly smaller boat (B 35s5) for use in the local "summer" when it becomes a bit hot in the Sea of Cortez.

Then we sailed the first boat to French Polynesia last year, intending to sail the South Pacific for at least a second season and then continue on to NZ where we would keep it for a few years (we have previously lived and still own a house in NZ (Chch) but still commute between summer there and summer here. But now, that boat is in FP and we are not. So having the second boat here in Vancouver has turned out to be a good idea but as the OP notes, a very expensive one.
