live aboard florida south

HI
Currently sailing the Great Lakes but looking to winter in SE Florida.
Need advice--

purchase slip?
rent slip?
dry dock in off months?
live aboard recommendations?
change locations?

Thanks in Advance

One approach might be to check Active Captain for likely marinas, then check individual marina websites for monthly rates.

The Stuart area, or other small city sites, appeal to me for that task more than the Miami area. A good bay helps, because it means your choice of water for a short trip. Rent a slip, not purchase. South Florida really doesn't have an off season. It changes just like the license plates change, but there is no need to dry dock for weather other than hurricanes.

We enjoyed Boot Key Harbor in Marathon. There is a good cruiser community. You can walk to restaurants, grocery stores, and home depot. The moorings are inexpensive and include dinghy dockage, weekly pumpout boat, showers, community room with Internet, and a work room. You can dinghy to a nice beach. Vero Beach is another option that is similar.

Cheers, RickG
