Question Hunter 40, Legend?

Good Day! My wife and I are contemplating the purchase of a mid- 1980s, 40' Hunter sailboat. We have searched the forums and the internet and have found references to the "Hunter 40" and the "Hunter 40 Legend" from this era. We have looked through the documentation that accompanies the vessel that we are considering for purchase; however, we can find no instance of the word "Legend" mentioned. The current owner is unable to provide assistance in identification...

My question: Did Hunter build two 40' boats during this era, one a "Legend" and the other a "Hunter 40," sans Legend?

I apologize if this question has already been addressed and we have somehow overlooked the thread(s)! I am a recovering powerboat guy; and, this will be our first sailboat. We intend to refit and use the boat to learn and explore the world of sailing; however, prior to purchase, we would like some clarification about the boat. Thank you for your time.

We had a mid-eighties Legend 40 prior to purchasing a 1993 Hunter Passage 42 CC. it was a fine boat for racing in Lake Ponchartrain and coastal cruising. To the best of my knowledge Hunter's 40' boats at that time where all in the Legend series. We have since met many Legend 37s - 40s while cruising in Belize.

Re: Hunter 40, Legend?

Here is the info on the 40 Legend. As far as I am aware, there was only one 40 model built between 84-91. Documentation would probably only say Hunter 40, with no mention of Legend. Be aware that there is a 5' or 6.6' draft model. Hope this helps. -

Re: Hunter 40, Legend?

The H40s have long been a favorite boat of mine. In fact - I bought one. A pimpin' 89 model.

Here's a run-down of why if you want to know: How We Got To Hunter

As far as I know all the 40s of that era were Legends. They're pretty awesome boats.

Re: Hunter 40, Legend?

The Hunter 40 & Hunter Legend are the same boat. When it was introduced, it was labeled "Hunter 40". Several years later the Hunter 37 Legend was introduced. It was such a success that the "Legend" brand was extended to other (larger) boats in the line. I owned a 40.... it is a great boat. Probably a better coastal / out-island boat than a true, blue water, big ocean craft. Oh, I worked for Hunter during those years.
